We calculate the free energies of adsorption between a solid wall and various arginine derivatives in water using molecular dynamics simulations. vary hydrophobic group size amino acids two ways hydrophilicity five ways. The energy decreases by increasing wall, regardless group. Amino with small groups are adsorbed on strongest hydrophilicity, but large is relatively small. benzene solvent incr...

Titanium and its alloys are typically used for fabrication of dental and orthopedic implants as they posses various desirable properties including biocompatibility and corrosion resistance. In spite of such benefits, titanium implants show lack of osseointegration after surgery in minor cases. The objective of this research has been to modify the surface of titanium alloy for medical applicatio...

BACKGROUND Surfactant proteins SP-A and SP-D are useful biomarkers in diagnosis, monitoring, and prognosis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Despite their high structural homology, their serum concentrations often vary in IPF patients. This retrospective study aimed to investigate distinct compartmentalization of SP-A and SP-D in the vasculature and lungs by bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (...

A palladium mediated synthesis of a common synthon for the syntheses of antioxidant analogues of naturally occurring salvianolic acids is presented. The synthetic route may be used to obtain analogues with a balanced lipophilicity/hydrophilicity which may result in potentially interesting LDL antioxidants for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

On page 2057, a Lewis acid porous carbon material with tunable hydrophilicity is prepared by temperature controlled pyrolysis of Al based metal-organic frameworks, by C.-H. Lin, H.-Y. Huang, S. Ma, and co-workers. This porous carbon highlights its low heat capacity, and high water uptake, which acts as efficient laser-absorbing matrix/sorbent for detecting trace levels of target compounds.

A solution-processed patterning of functional organic materials in emulsion is reported. The concept is to absorb microdrops onto predefined locations by hydrophilicity difference. Owing to a universal solvent used, the method can be applied to pattern variety materials on substrates of interest over large size. The figure shows Rhodamine 6G patterned film.

We report an unusually effective antifogging/frost-resisting coating based on conventional acrylic polymers. The intriguing antifogging property originated from the delicate balance between the hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity of the acrylic copolymers of 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate and methyl methacrylate, as well as between the water-swellability of the copolymer and the cross-linked...

Cyclodextrin derivatives are synthesized as membrane-disrupting agents via a microwave-assisted Huisgen reaction. Their ability to permeabilize bacterial membranes depends on the amino substituents and an appropriate balance of hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity, thus enabling the preparation of derivatives with selective toxicity against bacteria.

Robust diamond meshes with excellent superhydrophobic and superoleophilic properties have been fabricated. Superhydrophobicity is observed for water with varying pH from 1 to 14 with good recyclability. Reversible superhydrophobicity and hydrophilicity can be easily controlled. The diamond meshes show highly efficient water-oil separation and water pH droplet transference.

Exploring the role of surface hydrophilicity of non-precious metal N-doped carbon electrocatalysts in electrocatalysis is challenging. Herein we discover an ultra-hydrophilic non-precious carbon electrocatalyst, showing enhanced catalysis efficiency on both gravimetric and areal basis for oxygen reduction reaction due to a high dispersion of active centres.
