Treatment of 3-hydroxyoxindoles with trichloroacetonitrile (1.3 equiv.) and a catalytic amount of DBU (0.1 equiv.) followed by addition of nucleophiles (1.5 equiv.) and diphenylphosphoric acid (0.2 equiv.) afforded the 3,3-disubstituted oxindoles in good to excellent yields. DFT computations supported the notion that the reaction went through the 1-alkyl-2-oxo-2H-indol-1-ium intermediate.

We report catalytic, enantioselective intramolecular hydroacylation of N-vinylindole-2-carboxaldehydes. These hydroacylation reactions occur in the presence of a readily accessible rhodium catalyst and form chiral, non-racemic 2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrrolo[1,2-a]indol-1-ones in high yields with excellent enantioselectivities.

A highly enantioselective method for the catalytic cis-stilbene oxide opening reaction with indole derivatives was developed. The scope of the reaction was studied with a selection of aromatic meso-epoxides and various indoles, and the desired 2-(indol-3-yl)ethanol derivatives were obtained in good to excellent yields with excellent enantioselectivities (from 96 to >99% ee).
