Background: Intrathoracic goiters that compress nearby structures require surgical excision. Method and result: An abnormally large intrathoracic thyroid carcinoma (ITC) weighing 710 g was excised successfully from a 76 year-old female. For already 62 months, she is still surviving. Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, it is the largest ITC ever be reported in the literature.

We assessed the efficacy of conventional cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in 2week-old piglets. We determined intrathoracic vascular pressures, cerebral (CBF) and myocardial blood flows (MBF), and cerebral oxygen uptake during conventional CPR in this infant animal preparation and contrasted these results with those of previous work on adult animals. We further examined the effects of the in...

Thoracic manifestations of Neurofibromatosis include intrathoracic posterior mediastinal tumours, meningocoeles, kyphoscoliosis and interstitial fibrosis. Even though mediastinal neurofibromas are common, intrapulmonary neurofibromas are very rare. In this paper, we present a case of intrathoracic neurofibroma with intrabronchial extension. Lesions extending into the bronchial lumen making bron...

Primary pleural rhabdomyosarcoma is an extremely rare intrathoracic malignancy. We present a case of a previously healthy 2-year-old male complaining of cough and shortness of breath. The plain film, CT and MRI descriptions of this pleural tumor are presented. This is a fast growing tumor that is indistinguishable radiographically from other large intrathoracic tumors such as pleuropulmonary bl...

Tumours arising in the chemoreceptor system are termed chemodectomas. Intrathoracic chemodectoma is a rare tumour, only 74 cases having been described by 1977.1 Systemic catecholamine secretion by an intrathoracic chemodectoma is very uncommon andwe have been able to trace only one other published case report of proven catecholamine secretion. We describe a second case and discuss briefly these...

doi: 10.1007/s12519-011-0288-2 ©Children's Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, China and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2011. All rights reserved. A female infant, weighing 2740 g, was vaginally born at 42 weeks of gestation. The Apgar scores were 7 and 8 at 1 and 5 minutes, respectively. After birth, the infant immediately developed respiratory distress, and required conventio...

Despite the widespread clinical appliciktion of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the mechanism responsible for blood flow during this maneuver remains undefined, although it has been assumed that blood is squeezed from the heart by direct compression of the sternum. We studied the hemodynamics of CPR in 15 arrested dogs. During chest compression, pressures in the left ventricle, aorta, righ...

Introduction. The presence of T-wave alternans (TWA) has been shown to correlate with a higher risk for sudden cardiac death. The mechanism of TWA may be related to abnormalities in intracellular calcium handling, which is a mechanism in heart failure and associated arrhythmias as well. However, an association between TWA and cardiac volume status has not been demonstrated. Methods Used. We rep...

It has been shown in scattered reports (1, 2, 3, 4) from this laboratory that sudden changes of intrathoracic and abdominal pressure such as occur in coughing and straining produce simultaneous changes in the arterial pressure and in cerebrospinal pressure. It was argued that whereas these pressure changes may strain the arteries of the arms, legs and skin, the more vital arteries of the thorac...

A neurilemmoma (Schwannoma) of the left intrathoracic vagus nerve was discovered on a chest radiograph of a 28 yr old woman and was removed via a left thoracotomy. Although neurogenic tumours are the most common tumours of the mediastinum, they rarely involve the intrathoracic vagus nerve.
