Oxidative stress has been implicated as an important factor in induction of many disorders such as nephropathy and cancer. Iron by producing hydroxyl radical can cause this kind of stress. On the other hand nitric oxide (NO) when its concentration is high results in oxidative stress. Iron and NO have some interactions in each other function but there is no total agreement on this. For example i...

The title mol-ecule, [Fe(C(36)H(44)N(4))Cl]·1.5CH(2)Cl(2), is a high-spin square-pyramidal iron(III) porphyrinate with an average value for the equatorial Fe-N bond lengths of 2.065 (3) Å and an axial Fe-Cl distance of 2.2430 (13) Å. The iron cation is displaced by 0.518 (1) Å from the 24-atom mean plane of the porphyrin ring. These values are typical for high-spin iron(III) porphyrinates.

BACKGROUND Iron supplementation is employed to treat post-malarial anaemia in environments where iron deficiency is common. Malaria induces an intense inflammatory reaction that stalls reticulo-endothelial macrophagal iron recycling from haemolysed red blood cells and inhibits oral iron absorption, but the magnitude and duration of these effects are unclear. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We ...

A method is described for measuring the plasma unsaturated iron-binding capacity in the presence of very high concentrations of iron as iron-dextran. The procedure utilizes (59)Fe to label the apotransferrin with subsequent separation of ionic iron from transferrin-bound iron on an ion exchange or Sephadex G.25 column. The unsaturated iron-binding capacity has been measured in rabbits and dogs ...

SBR759 is a novel polynuclear iron(III) oxide-hydroxide starch·sucrose·carbonate complex being developed for oral use in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients with hyperphosphatemia on hemodialysis. SBR759 binds inorganic phosphate released by food uptake and digestion in the gastro-intestinal tract increasing the fecal excretion of phosphate with concomitant reduction of serum phosphate concen...

Iron supplements acutely increase hepcidin, but the duration and magnitude of the increase, its dose dependence, and its effects on subsequent iron absorption have not been characterized in humans. Better understanding of these phenomena might improve oral iron dosing schedules. We investigated whether the acute iron-induced increase in hepcidin influences iron absorption of successive daily ir...

Selective UV-spectrophotometric methods for determination of iron(III) in iron(II) samples have been developed. The methods are based on the interaction of Fe(III) with quercetin and morin, compounds of the flavonoid group. Redox reactions occurring between Fe(III) ions and the reagents used make the basis for the detection. Iron(II) does not react with quercetin and morin under the conditions ...

The mechanism of aqueous contaminant removal by elemental iron (Fe 0 ) materials (e.g., in Fe 0 -H2O systems) has been largely discussed in the “iron technology” literature. Two major removal mechanisms are usually discussed: (i) contaminant adsorption onto Fe 0 oxidation products, and (ii) contaminant reduction by Fe 0 , Fe II or H/H2. However, a closer inspection of the chemistry of the Fe 0 ...

The reaction of N-(2-pyridylmethyl)iminodiethanol (H2pmide) and Fe(NO3)3·9H2O in MeOH led to the formation of a dimeric iron(III) complex, [(Hpmide)Fe(NO3)]2(NO3)2·2CH3OH (1). Its anion-exchanged form, [(pmide)Fe(N3)]2 (2), was prepared by the reaction of 1and NaN3 in MeOH, during which the Hpmide ligand of 1 was also deprotonated. These compounds were investigated by single crystal X-ray diffr...

Experiments have been carried out with field-grown pear trees to investigate the effect of iron chlorosis on the composition of the leaf apoplast. Iron deficiency was associated with an increase in the leaf apoplastic pH from the control values of 5.5-5.9 to 6.5-6.6, as judged from direct pH measurements in apoplastic fluid obtained by centrifugation and fluorescence of leaves incubated with 5-...
