OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the influence of fetal hemoglobin (Hb F) on hemolysis biomarkers in sickle cell anemia patients. METHODS Fifty adult sickle cell anemia patients were included in the study. All patients were taking hydroxyurea for at least six months and were followed at the outpatient clinic of a hospital in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil. The control group consisted of 20 he...
Activities of total lactate dehydrogenase, which plays an important role in providing energy for cell metabolism, lactate dehydrogenase-X, an isoenzyme of lactate dehydrogenase supposed to be specific for germinal epithelium activity, diluted semen absorbance and some other properties have been measured in 51 seminal plasma samples. Aiming to study its clinical use as a marker of seminiferous e...
PURPOSE Ischemic neurodegeneration contributes to many retinal diseases. An isolated retina model has been used to examine the neuronal cell death induced by deprivation of oxygen and glucose (simulated ischemia) as a model for ischemic disease. METHODS Neurodegeneration in the isolated chick embryo retina was induced by simulated ischemia and assessed using biochemical (lactate dehydrogenase...
The five isoenzymes of potato (Solanum tuberasum) lactate dehydrogenase have been resolved by affinity chromatography. Mixtures of isoenzymes LDH-1 and LDH-5 dissociate and reassociate during freezing and thawing to produce five isoenzymes. These results indicate that potato lactate dehydrogenase isoenzymes are primary isoenzymes of the vertebrate type, which are composed of two subunit types.
Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH; EC 1.1.1.27) and malate dehydrogenase (MDH; EC 1.1.1.37) are the enzymes involved in energy metabolism of Eri silkworm, Philosamia ricini. However, no previous study has been reported about effect of low temperature exposure on their levels in different tissues of Eri silkworm. The present study was aimed to the time-course effects of low temperature (~10°C) exposure...
1. An NAD-specific L(+)-lactate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.27) from the mycelium of Phycomyces blakesleeanus N.R.R.L. 1555 (-) was purified approximately 700-fold. The enzyme has a molecular weight of 135,000-140,000. The purified enzyme gave a single, catalytically active, protein band after polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis. It shows optimum activity between pH 6.7 and 7.5. 2. The Phycomyces bl...
Two cases of congestive cardiac failure had unusually high activities of serum lactate dehydrogenase and lactate dehydrogenase isoenzyme-5. Values for isoenzyme-5 exceeding 87% of the total serum activity, and increases of 228- to 380-fold of the upper reference limit, are very uncommon.
This note compares the substrate specificity of D-lactate dehydrogenase (D-LDH, EC 1.1.1.28) to that of L-lactate dehydrogenase (L-LDH, EC 1.1.1.27), illustrates three procedures that use D-LDH in synthesis and two methods for recycling NADH, and provides experimental details illustrating the use of D-LDH in organic synthesis.
