Femur parameters are key prerequisites for scientifically designing anatomical plates. Meanwhile, individual differences in femurs present a challenge to design well-fitting anatomical plates. Therefore, to design anatomical plates more scientifically, analyses of femur parameters with statistical methods were performed in this study. The specific steps were as follows. First, taking eight anat...

Providing feedback on pronunciation errors in computer assisted language learning systems requires that pronunciation errors be detected automatically. In the present study we compare four types of classifiers that can be used for this purpose: two acoustic-phonetic classifiers (one of which employs linear-discriminant analysis (LDA)), a classifier based on cepstral coefficients in combination ...

This paper extends previous work in discriminant analysis with von Mises-Fisher distributions (e. g., Morris and Laycock, Biometrika, 1974) to general dimension, allowing computation of misclassification probabilities. The main result is the probability distribution of the cosine transformation of a von Mises-Fisher distribution, that is, the random variable , where , satisfying , is a random d...

This study examined the use of the Skills Acquistion Trainer for Badminton (SATB) software as a visual based training (VBT) method for a group of 41 participants. Using this program, we identified the athlete’s skill level and awareness, and attempted to improve their overall in-game performance and decision making skills. Three different types of analyses were conducted on the SATB over the te...

High-dimensional discriminant analysis is of fundamental importance in multivariate statistics. Existing theoretical results sharply characterize different procedures, providing sharp convergence results for the classification risk, as well as the l2 convergence results to the discriminative rule. However, sharp theoretical results for the problem of variable selection have not been established...

We describe Dublin City University (DCU)’s participation in the Hyperlinking sub-task of the Search and Hyperlinking task MediaEval 2014. The investigation focuses on how to efficiently identify target segments in a large BBC TV dataset. In our submission, Linear Discriminant Analysis is used to estimate fusion weights for multimodal features with the objective of improving the reliability of c...

Diagnostic accuracy of the Dynamic Assessment and Intervention (DAI) tool (Miller, Gillam & Peña, 2001) was examined with 17 Grade 3 children belonging to a First Nations community who were classifi ed either as normal language learners (NLL) or as having possible language learning diffi culties. The DAI was designed to provide a culturally sensitive evaluation of language learning abilities. R...

In this paper, the problem of selecting most representative features among a feature set is considered. Two new feature selection algorithms are introduced and their performances are compared with some well-known feature selection algorithms. The algorithms are tested with the iris data set, three artificially generated data sets and a data set obtained from steel surfaces.
