(so-called rY values). The suggested ‘‘correction’’ method makes an a priori detrending of the rY series and then extends the linear regression between rY and sunspot numbers established for the last 25 years to earlier times. The suggested ‘‘correction’’ of sunspot numbers by roughly 30% goes far beyond the traditional estimates of observational uncertainties of sunspots. Concentrating here on...

This paper presents an algorithm for calibrating strapdown magnetometers in the magnetic field domain. In contrast to the traditional method of compass swinging, which computes a series of heading correction parameters and, thus, is limited to use with two-axis systems, this algorithm estimates magnetometer output errors directly. Therefore, this new algorithm can be used to calibrate a full th...

We apply a look-up table technique to calibrate both position and orientation readings from a magnetic tracker for use in virtual environments within a defined working volume. In a test volume of 2.4 cubic meters, the method reduced the tracker’s average position error by 79% and its average orientation error by 40%. We test the correction table against the tracker’s performance outdoors (a met...

The measurement error of the differencing (i.e., using two homogenous field sensors at a known baseline distance) magnetic gradient tensor system includes the biases, scale factors, nonorthogonality of the single magnetic sensor, and the misalignment error between the sensor arrays, all of which can severely affect the measurement accuracy. In this paper, we propose a low-cost artificial vector...

Electromagnetic coils are ubiquitously used in the modern world in motors, antennas, etc. In many applications (magnetic field coil calibration and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and imaging) there is a strong need for a homogeneous magnetic field. In this paper, we propose a simple modelling based on serial Fourier decomposition allowing the determination of the electrical conductor d...

Introduction: According to the literature, optical coherence tomography (OCT) can be used measure radiation absorbed dose. This study was carried out to design a computed tomography system for the calculation of absorbed dose and optimization of dose delivery in radiotherapy using gel dosimeters. Material and Methods: An advanced charge-coupled device based OCT system was developed in laborator...

We present an algorithm to fit 3D straight tracks in a set-up of pixel/strip detectors in zero or negligible magnetic field. The fitting method is iterative and it allows for the arbitrary orientation of detectors. The fit algorithm is used for detector position calibration and track reconstruction in the Helsinki Silicon Beam Telescope.

This paper surveys the instrumentation, calibration procedures, measurement techniques, and standards which can be used to characterize extremely low frequency (ELF) electric and magnetic fields. While the focus of the paper is on power frequency and power frequency harmonic fields, the measurement methods discussed are appropriate in principle for other ELF frequencies.

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation times are shown to provide a unique probe of adsorbate-adsorbent interactions in liquid-saturated porous materials. A short theoretical analysis is presented, which shows that the ratio of the longitudinal to transverse relaxation times (T1/T2) is related to an adsorbate-adsorbent interaction energy, and we introduce a quantitative metric esurf (based...

We present a new calibration procedure for low-cost nine degrees-of-freedom (9DOF) magnetic, angular rate and gravity (MARG) sensor systems, which relies on a calibration cube, a reference table and a body sensor network (BSN). The 9DOF MARG sensor is part of our recently-developed "Integrated Posture and Activity Network by Medit Aachen" (IPANEMA) BSN. The advantage of this new approach is the...
