Mitral and tricuspid are increasingly prevalent. Doppler echocardiography not only detects the presence of regurgitation but also permits to understand mechanisms of regurgitation, quantification of its severity and repercussions. The present document aims to provide standards for the assessment of mitral and tricuspid regurgitation.

BACKGROUND Conventional Doppler measurements, including mitral inflow and pulmonary venous flow, are used to estimate left ventricular end diastolic pressure (LVEDP). However, these parameters have limitations in predicting LVEDP among patients with mitral regurgitation. This study sought to establish whether the correlation between measurements derived from tissue Doppler echocardiography and ...

PURPOSE In this report we review our experience of operations on mitral regurgitation associated with abnormal papillary muscles/chordae tendineae of the mitral valves and discussed the clinical characteristics, operative findings, and treatment strategies. METHODS Undifferentiated papillary muscle was defined as a hypoplastic chordae tendineae with anomalous formation of papillary muscles at...

A 68-year old man developed heart failure 15 days after coronary bypass surgery and mitral repair with an annuloplasty ring. Transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) showed a severe eccentric mitral regurgitation. Three-dimensional TEE revealed the exact anatomic characteristics of the annulus dehiscence. This technique is useful in planning the intervention properly. Figure 1: (...

The gold standard treatment of degenerative mitral valve disease remains surgical repair. The classic repair described by Dr. Carpentier (1) with leaflet resection and annuloplasty remains the primary technique for mitral repair. Other techniques such as the “American correction” (2) or artificial chordae have been introduced with similar success rates. Innovations in surgical approach over the...

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to report our 19-year experience in redo surgery for failure of mitral valve repair (MVRep) in degenerative disease. METHODS From 1987 to 2006, 43 consecutive patients (32 males) underwent either redo MVRep (n = 21) or redo mitral valve replacement (n = 22) for failure of MVRep. Age ranged from 10 to 78 years (median, 59 years). Forty-one patients (95%...

We present new algorithms to compute patient specific strain maps for mitral valve leaflets, by tracking and modeling deformations of the mitral valve apparatus in 3D echocardiography. We can then quantify comparisons of mitral leaflets strain maps between normal patients and cases of mitral valve prolapse or regurgitation. For patients with mitral valve regurgitation, we compare mitral leaflet...

We report a case of a left atrial myxoma associated with mitral valve regurgitation in a pregnant patient, describing the importance of transoesophageal or transthoracic echocardiography, preoperatively and during the operation, as a useful tool to rule out any associated valvular damage or mitral annular dilatation as an underlying cause of mitral regurgitation.

We here present the case of a 35-year-old man with mitral valve paravalvular abnormal tunnel with mitral regurgitation caused by anterior chest trauma. The abnormal tunnel is between left ventricular and left artrial. We sutured the tunnel with a patch from the left atrial side. Meanwhile, we performed the mitral valve annuoplasty because of the mitral regurgitation accompanied. The postoperati...
