Monocytes-macrophages and polymorphonuclear leukocytes contain an acid proteolytic enzyme that cleaves tritiated hemoglobin. The monocyte-macrophage-derived enzymatic activity was completely inhibited by pepstatin A, a property of cathepsin D. Monocyte-derived macrophages developed detectable cathepsin D-like activity after 5 days in culture, and this activity coincided with the appearance of o...

A new species of microsporidian, Septata intestinalis, was recently recognized as an opportunistic pathogen of AIDS patients. In this study, it was cultured from the nasopharyngeal aspirate of a human immunodeficiency virus type 1-infected patient with disseminated microsporidiosis. In human embryonic lung cells exposed to S. intestinalis, a cytopathic effect appeared within 28 days as foci of ...

Pulse labeling with tritiated thymidine shows that the response in the mouse to infection with L. monocytogenes includes a large increase in the division of lymphoid cells in the spleen, an increase in the division of macrophages in the liver, and an accumulation of monocyte-derived macrophages at infective foci in the tissues. A single 2.5 mg dose of cortisone acetate given at the beginning of...

The yield as well as phenotypic and functional parameters of canine peripheral blood monocyte-derived macrophages were analyzed. The cells that remained adherent to Teflon after 10 days of culture had high phagocytic activity when inoculated with Leishmania chagasi. Flow cytometric analysis demonstrated that more than 80% of cultured cells were positive for the monocyte/macrophage marker CD14.

Although numerous chemokines act on monocytes, none of them is specific for these cells. Here, we show that breast and kidney-expressed chemokine (BRAK) is a highly selective monocyte chemoattractant. Migration efficacy and Bordetella pertussis toxin-sensitive Ca(2+) mobilization responses to BRAK were strongly enhanced after treatment of monocytes with the cyclic AMP-elevating agents prostagla...
