BACKGROUND Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is associated with neurologic deficits recently attributed to the magnocellular pathway of the lateral geniculate nucleus. OBJECTIVE To test the hypotheses that FXS individuals 1) have a pervasive visual motion perception impairment affecting neocortical circuits in the parietal lobe and 2) have deficits in integrative neocortical mechanisms necessary for p...

Computed tomographic (CT) findings in 18 patients with temporal bone trauma were reviewed. Eight patients suffered longitudinal fractures of the petrous bone, which were associated with ossicular dislocation in two patients. Transverse fractures were detected in six patients, with a contralateral mastoid fracture in one patient. In four patients, the fractures were restricted to the mastoid reg...

Primate models are essential tools for translational research in stroke but are reportedly inconsistent in their ability to produce cortical infarcts of reproducible size. Here, we report a new stroke model using a transorbital, reversible, two-vessel occlusion approach in male rhesus macaques that produces consistent and reproducible cortical infarcts. The right middle cerebral artery (distal ...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Preoperative embolization of meningiomas is frequently used to facilitate surgery and to reduce intraoperative blood loss. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the frequency of procedure-related neurologic complications during and after particle embolization of intracranial meningiomas. METHODS Between 1996 and 2004, 185 consecutive patients underwent particle embo...

BACKGROUND Inhalational anesthetics are neuroprotective in rat models of global ischemia. To determine whether isoflurane at a clinically relevant concentration is neuroprotective in a canine model of cardiac arrest, we measured neurologic function and hippocampal Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) content 20 h after cardiac arrest. METHODS We tested the neuroprotective effe...

Hossein Kalani,

Although the issue has not yet been fully resolved, there is reason to believe that TRI-I may have a trophic effect on the normal motoneuron and may transien tly improve the neurologic deficit in ALS. Since ALS is not a simple TRI-I deficiency disease, this improvement probably occurs via a secondary mecha -nism-possibly another neurotransmitter. It is uncertain at this time whether this effec...

Study Design Retrospective case series. Objective To describe the perioperative complications (0 to 90 days) associated with pedicle subtraction osteotomies (PSOs) performed at a tertiary spine center by two experienced spine surgeons who recently adopted the technique. Methods We reviewed all 65 patients (47 women and 18 men; mean age 60 years, range 24 to 80) who underwent a PSO at our instit...

Chondrosarcoma is a very uncommon malignant primary bone tumor, especially, it occurs extremely rare in the spine. A 52-year-old man was admitted to the emergency room with sudden paraplegia. Twelve hours prior to a paraplegic event, he visited an outpatient clinic with discomfort and tenderness around the medial border of the right scapular, and his neurologic status was absolutely intact. Mag...

We present a unique case of multiple sCADs occurring after a ruptured intracranial aneurysm embolization. We discuss the impact of head extension during embolization as the prevailing factor in multiple artery dissections in this case and point out another cause of new-onset neurologic deficit in patients with aneurysmal SAH.

Carotid endarterectomy was performed 743 times during 56 months in a community hospital by 24 surgeons. The mortality rate was 2.7% and permanent stroke occurred in 1.8%. Temporary postoperative neurologic deficit occurred in 3.5%. The frequency with which the surgeon performed the procedure did not appear significant in the incidence of postoperative morbidity and mortality.
