The sensitivity of a sensor to strain or the temperature variations due to distributed Brillouin scattering are partially related to the type of fibers used and the Brillouin scattering induced effective index. In this paper, a highly nonlinear fiber that can generate a higher Brillouin scattering signal is compared to a standard single mode fiber in a short-time-Fourier-transform Brillouin opt...

We image semiflexible polymer networks under shear at the micrometer scale. By tracking embedded probe particles, we determine the local strain field, and directly measure its uniformity, or degree of affineness, on scales of 2-100 microm. The degree of nonaffine strain depends upon the polymer length and cross-link density, consistent with theoretical predictions. We also find a direct corresp...

This study was conducted to compare some nonlinear functions to describe the broiler growth curve of the Cobb500 strain. A flock of fifty one-day-old chicks were randomly selected from a henhouse of 2500 chicks. Our goal was to establish a growth curve using weighting data using mathematical solutions of time-dependent differential functions. In total, six equations were subjected to a statisti...

Large-amplitude oscillatory shear flow (LAOS) is a popular for studying the nonlinear physics of complex fluids. Specifically, the strain rate sweep (also called the strain sweep) is used routinely to identify the onset of nonlinearity. In this paper, we give exact expressions for the nonlinear complex viscosity and the corresponding nonlinear complex normal stress coefficients for the Oldroyd ...

A comprehensive study on the compressive uniaxial mechanical response of the polymer Adiprene-L100, a polyether urethane-based rubber, is presented. Quasi-static and dynamic experiments, under compression, were performed at a wide range of strain rates (10 54"45000 s ) and temperatures ( 1004T4270 F). The behavior of the polymer was found to be nonlinear and highly dependent on both, strain rat...

Collagen is the main structural and load-bearing element of various connective tissues, where it forms the extracellular matrix that supports cells. It has long been known that collagenous tissues exhibit a highly nonlinear stress-strain relationship [1, 2], although the origins of this nonlinearity remain unknown [3]. Here, we show that the nonlinear stiffening of reconstituted type I collagen...

We derive a quadratically nonlinear equation that describes the motion of a tangential discontinuity in incompressible magnetohydrodynamics near the onset of a Kelvin–Helmholtz instability. We show that nonlinear effects enhance the instability and give a criterion for it to occur in terms of a longitudinal strain of the fluid motion along the discontinuity.

In this paper, a nonlinear constitutive law and a curve fitting, two relationships between the stress-strain and the shear stress-strain for sandstone material were used to obtain a second-order polynomial constitutive equation. Based on the established polynomial constitutive equations and Newton’s second law, a mathematical model of the non-homogeneous nonlinear wave equation under an externa...
