Superfluidity is a fascinating phenomenon that, at the macroscopic scale, leads to dissipationless flow and the emergence of vortices. While these macroscopic manifestations of superfluidity are well described by theories that have their origin in Landau's two-fluid model, our microscopic understanding of superfluidity is far from complete. Using analytical and numerical ab initio approaches, t...
The integrals of motion for a cylindrically symmetric stationary vortex are obtained in a covariant description of a mixture of interacting superconductors, superfluids and normal fluids. The relevant integrated stress–energy coefficients for the vortex with respect to a vortex–free reference state are calculated in the approximation of a “stiff”, i.e. least compressible, relativistic equation ...
The ground state of (4)He confined in a system with the topology of cylinder can display properties of solid, superfluid, and liquid crystal. This phase, which we call a compactified supersolid (CSS), originates from wrapping the basal planes of the bulk hcp solid into concentric cylindrical shells, with several central shells exhibiting superfluidity along the axial direction. Its main feature...
The origin of the excess of matter over antimatter in our Universe remains one of the fundamental problems. The dynamical baryogenesis in the process of the broken symmetry electroweak transition in the expanding Universe is the widely discussed model where the baryonic asymmetry is induced by the quantum chiral anomaly. We discuss the modelling of this phenomenon in superfluid He and supercond...
In order to describe unbalanced ultracold fermionic quantum gases on optical lattices in a harmonic trap, we investigate an attractive (U < 0) asymmetric (t↑ 6= t↓) Hubbard model with a Zeeman-like magnetic field. In view of the model’s spatial inhomogeneity, we focus in this paper on the solution at Hartree-Fock level. The Hartree-Fock Hamiltonian is diagonalized with particular emphasis on su...
The concept of acoustic metric introduced previously by Unruh (PRL-1981) is extended to include Cartan torsion by analogy with the scalar wave equation in Riemann-Cartan (RC) spacetime. This equation describes irrotational perturbations in rotational non-relativistic fluids. This physical motivation allows us to show that the acoustic line element can be conformally mapped to the line element o...
In bulk superfluid 3He at zero magnetic field, two phases emerge with the B-phase stable everywhere except at high pressures and temperatures, where the A-phase is favoured. Aerogels with nanostructure smaller than the superfluid coherence length are the only means to introduce disorder into the superfluid. Here we use a torsion pendulum to study 3He confined in an extremely anisotropic, nemati...
This letter is based on the hypothesis of a small entropy content of the superfluid fraction of liquid helium. We show that such a superfluid entropy gives rise to a new sound mode in a ring-shaped superleak. This mode is named sixth sound. We propose an experiment by which its sound velocity and thereby the superfluid entropy can be measured. A negative experiment would yield a new upper limit...
It has been shown that the Boltzmann equation for the viscosity of the A-phase of superfluid 3He at low temperatures has the same form as for a normal Ferrni liquid. The viscosity coefficients A, B, C, D and E are derived exactly. The h , parameter plays an important role in determining the temperature dependence of the viscosity coefficients
