Computer generated holograms (CGHs) have been successfully used for wavefront correction for measuring aspheric surfaces. Features on the CGHs have assisted the alignment of the optical test equipment. CGHs can also be used to provide alignment references for other complex optical systems. This paper discusses the types of CGHs that can be used for optical alignment and gives some examples.

A double-periodic array of pairs of parallel gold nanorods is shown to have a negative refractive index in the optical range. Such behavior results from the plasmon resonance in the pairs of nanorods for both the electric and the magnetic components of light. We prove that, under certain conditions, the capacity of an optical communication channel with in-line, nonlinear filtering (regeneration) elements can be higher than the Shannon capacity for the corresponding linear Gaussian white noise channel.
