In J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 83, 034404 (2014), we designed a scheme of waveguide arrays with long-range linear coupling effects and studied the bright solitons in this system. In this paper, we further study the dynamics of dark and grey solitons in such waveguide arrays. The numerical simulations show that the stabilities of dark solitons and grey solitons depend on the normalized decay length and t...

An increasing number of systems and applications depend on photonics for transmission and signal processing. This includes data centers, communications systems, environmental sensing, radar, lidar, and microwave signal generation. Such systems increasingly rely on monolithic integration of traditionally bulk optical components onto the chip scale to significantly reduce power and cost while sim...

We study the cooperative optical coupling between regularly spaced atoms in a one-dimensional waveguide using decompositions to subradiant and superradiant collective excitation eigenmodes, direct numerical solutions, and analytical transfer-matrix methods. We illustrate how the spectrum of transmitted light through the waveguide including the emergence of narrow Fano resonances can be understo...

We proposed and designed novel arrayed-waveguide gratings (AWGs) for time-to-space (T-S) conversion-based high-speed optical signal processing. Recently, the frequency selectivity of AWGs has been considerably improved, offering the possibility of powerful tool for the manipulation of optical spectra. An arrayed-waveguide grating was fabricated, integrated with a 90 degree deflecting mirror. Mo...

Effective methods for manipulating, isolating and sorting cells and particles are essential for the development of microfluidic-based life science research and diagnostic platforms. We demonstrate an integrated optical platform for cell and particle sorting in microfluidic structures. Fluorescent-dyed particles are excited using an integrated optical waveguide network within micro-channels. A d...

The 1 × 4 optical switch array for wavelength division multiplexing system has been demonstrated where four 1 × 4 waveguide digital optical switches have been integrated into one chip. Tape fiber is used as the connection between switch modules to avoid an interconnection fiber jungle. The architecture can be adapted to any number of wavelength channels. Redundant optical switch stage for cross...

For the first time detailed interactions between optical and acoustic modes in a silicon slot waveguide are presented. A new computer code has been developed by using a full-vectorial formulation to study the acoustic modes in optical waveguides. The results have shown that the acoustic modes in an optical slot waveguide are not purely longitudinal or transverse but fully hybrid in nature. The ...

This paper reviews the progress of the passive optical network, and discusses a viable means for the realisation of future generation agile gigabits passive optical networks, (GPONs) by the use of low cost narrow band tunable lasers and arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs). It projectes a twostage strategy for the realisation of future generation agile GPONs, i.e., the near-term Time and Wavelengt...

Fiber-optic chemical sensing has been demonstrated with a side-polished single-mode optical fiber, evanescently coupled to chemically sensitive Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) overlay waveguides. The sensors exhibit a channel-dropping response centered on a wavelength that is dependent on the thickness and the refractive index of the overlay waveguide. It has been shown that pH-sensitive organic dyes pr...

We describe the first observation of spontaneous Raman emission, stimulated amplification, and lasing in a SiGe waveguide. A pulsed optical gain of 16dB and a lasing threshold of 25 W peak pulse power (20 mW average) is observed for a Si1-xGex waveguide with x=7.5%. At the same time, a 40 GHz frequency downshift is observed in the Raman spectrum compared to that of a silicon waveguide. The spec...
