Understanding the impact of changing pasture composition on reducing emissions of GHGs in dairy grazing systems is an important issue to mitigate climate change. The aim of this study was to estimate daily CH₄ emissions of dairy cows grazing two mixed pastures with contrasting composition of grasses and legumes: L pasture with 60% legumes on Dry Matter (DM) basis and G pasture with 75% grasses ...

Due to genotype by environment interaction (GxE), conventional bulls might not be suitable for organic production circumstances. Therefore, lactation records from Holstein cows on organic and conventional farms were used to estimate the magnitude of GxE between organic and conventional production circumstances. GxE was quantified by estimating the genetic correlations between production traits ...

This paper investigates the extent to which media coverage on organic dairy issues influences consumers’ willingness pay (WTP) for attribute of milk. We find that news with contents most often viewed as negative towards are more powerful in decreasing WTP milk compared positive impact articles dairy. Interestingly, increasing exposure even take a neutral stance also increases their attribute.

UNLABELLED Up to 50% of infants present with symptoms of regurgitation, infantile colic and/or constipation during the first 12 months of life. Although they are often classed as functional disorders, there is an overlap with cows' milk allergy. We present practical algorithms for the management of such disorders, based on existing evidence and general consensus, with a particular focus on prim...

Concentrations of toxic heavy metals (cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb)) and major nutritional and trace elements (Ca, Mg, P, Cu, Fe, Mn, Se, Zn) were analyzed in the milk of Simmental (n = 20) and Holstein-Friesian (n = 20) cows from an organic farm. Elements were determined using inductively coupled plasma emission atomic spectrometry. The conducted research showed that the milk of Simmental cows was c...

All methods for the estimation of aflatoxin M~ in milk involve extraction with organic solvents. In some methods, fresh milk or reconstituted powder is shaken with a suitable extractant so as to precipitate proteins and extract the toxin simultaneously, while in others a separate protein precipitant is used. In no method is protein precipitation complete, however, and at the extraction stage th...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of inclusion of tannic acid on some performance traits and nutrient digestibility in Holstein dairy calves. A total of 20 seven days old Holstein calves were randomly assigned to 4 experimental treatments with 5 calves each. The treatments were as follows: 1) basal diet formulated to meet all nutritional requirement of calves according to NRC (20...

Levels of the polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), a class of widely used flame retardants, appear to be rising rapidly in human tissues, as evidenced by studies of human breast milk. The case of the PBDEs illustrates the value of breast-milk monitoring programs in identifying important emerging pollutants, and highlights why such monitoring programs are needed in the United States. A review...

First cut red clover-grass mixture sward were ensiled in two pits with inoculant (Lactobacillus rhamnosus + Propionibacterium freudenreichii ssp. Shermanii) and without any additives. Fermentation quality, nutrient losses and aerobic stability of silages were determined. The inoculated silage had no butyric acid, nutrient losses were lowered by 19.4%. In inoculated silage organic matter digesti...

Using a unique data set where an unbalanced panel of more than 1,000 households have reported their purchases of groceries in great detail over a period of six months it is shown that consumption of organic milk increases significantly with level of education, urbanisation and income. Age and presence of children in the household have no significant effects. Combining the purchase data with a q...
