We announce the completion of the genome sequence of a phenol derivative-degrading bacterium, Rhodococcus erythropolis strain CCM2595. This bacterium is interesting in the context of bioremediation for its capability to degrade phenol, catechol, resorcinol, hydroxybenzoate, hydroquinone, p-chlorophenol, p-nitrophenol, pyrimidines, and sterols.

Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTMAB)-bentonite was produced by the exchange of cetyltrimethylammonium (CTMA) cations for inorganic ions on the internal and external surfaces of bentonite. CTMAB-bentonite was used to remove organic contaminants of varying polar character from water. The properties and mechanisms for CTMABbentonite to sorb benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, nitrobenzene, aniline, ...

The effect of dietary ascorbate on hepatic UDP glucuronyltransferase (UDPGT) appears to be selective in that only certain isozymes of UDPGT are jeopardized. In this study, ascorbic acid deficiency produced a 68% reduction in the specific activity of hepatic UDPGT towards p-nitrophenol. Earlier studies showed a reduction in UDPGT activity towards p-aminophenol in ascorbate-deficient guinea pigs,...

A novel detection method for organophosphate neurotoxins has been described, based on the fluorescence quenching of a Coumarin derivative. These dyes are similar in structure to some organophosphates (OPs), and they fluoresce in the blue-green region of the spectra. This methodology has been utilized for the detection of organophosphates whose hydrolysis product is p-nitrophenol by using an enz...

A thermostable phenol sulfotransferase, SULT1A1, has been implicated in numerous detoxification and bioactivation pathways; however, little is known regarding its endogenous function or its putative role in mediating risk for human environmental disease. A simple endpoint colorimetric assay is described that can be used for rapid phenotyping of SULT1A1 activity in human populations. The assay u...

The effect of adjuvant-induced arthritis on hepatic microsomal glucuronidation was studied in the rat. Arthritis was induced by injection of Mycobacterium butyricum suspended in liquid paraffin. Vmax and the Michaelis-Menten constant values for the in vitro glucuronidation of R- and S-ketoprofen, acetaminophen, and diflunisal by liver microsomes obtained from control and adjuvant-induced arthri...

Adsorption of 1-Butanol, Phenol, and P-nitrophenol on activated carbon havebeen studied. The results were used to testifying the validity of different modelsbased on thermodynamic principles: Freundlich, Langmuir and Henry isotherms. The maximum capacity of adsorbent for three compounds was determined, Theconstants of equilibrium were determined by Freundlich isotherm and virialisotherm expressi...

A 47-year-old woman, after being exposed to nitrobenzene for 17 months, was admitted to hospital because of headache, nausea, cyanosis, and general weakness. Laboratory study revealed, in addition to methaemoglobinaemia, the presence of p-aminophenol as well as p-nitrophenol in the urine. Both compounds gradually disappeared from the urine during the two weeks after she was removed from the tox...
