Nikola RADOVANOVIĆ Pacemaker Center Clinical Center of Serbia Dr Koste Todorovića 8 11000 Belgrade Serbia [email protected] SUMMARY Introduction Vasovagal syncope is the most common type of reflex syncope. Efficacy of cardiac pacing in this indication has not been the subject of many studies and pacemaker therapy in patients with vasovagal syncope is still controversial. Objective This study ...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Chest radiographs (CXRs) are performed routinely after permanent pacemaker implantation to identify pacemaker lead position and exclude pneumothorax. We assessed the clinical value and need for this procedure. DESIGN Retrospective analysis of pacemaker data and CXRs following permanent pacemaker insertion between December 2002 and February 2004. MATERIALS AND METHODS Pos...

AIM The aim of the present study was to validate pacemaker telemetry as a diagnostic feature for detecting atrial tachyarrhythmias (AT) during pacemaker treatment in patients with sick sinus syndrome (SSS). METHODS AND RESULTS Patients with SSS and bradytachy syndrome (n = 28, 20 women), mean age 71 +/- 10.3 years, were included. The patients were treated with AAIR (n = 14) or DDDR pacing. At...

We studied whether nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S) have an interaction on the pacemaker activities of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) from the mouse small intestine. The actions of NO and H(2)S on pacemaker activities were investigated by using the whole-cell patch-clamp technique and intracellular Ca(2+) analysis at 30℃ in cultured mouse ICC. Exogenously applied (±)-S-nitroso-...

Background—A large disparity in medical health care is clearly evident between developed and underserved nations in the field of cardiac electrophysiology, specifically pacemaker implantation. This study aimed to assess the safety of pacemaker reuse. Methods and Results—A computerized search from January 1, 1970, to September 1, 2010, identified 18 studies with outcomes of pacemaker reuse. The ...

Pacing lead dislodgement contributes substantially, to the list of causes of early pacemaker failure. Reel's syndrome is a rare cause of pacemaker failure, resulting from the dislodging of pacing electrodes by manipulation of the pulse generator by the patient. We describe here an intriguing case of pacemaker lead dislodgement by a novel and frequently underdiagnosed mechanism that mimicked the...

A 65-year-old man was scheduled for pacemaker implantation for symptomatic sick-sinus-syndrome (SSS). He suffered from multiple drug-allergies and allergies to several metals like quicksilver and titanium. Gold-coated pacemaker generators and polyurethane leads are effective in avoiding allergic reactions to pacing system components. Therefore, we decided to implant a custom-made gold-coated DD...

Electrical excitation of the mammalian heart originates from specialized pacemaker cells in the right atrium. Pacemaker activity depends on multiple ion channels and transport mechanisms that reside primarily within the plasma membrane. However, recent evidence indicates that intracellular Ca2+ release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum also contributes importantly to atrial pacemaker function.

Reel syndrome is an uncommon condition in which a patient's subconscious, inadvertent, or deliberate external manipulation of their cardiac pacemaker results in the movement of the transducer wires along its transverse axis. We report a clinical case of a 67 year old lady with permanent pacemaker presenting with pacemaker malfunction and was detected with reel syndrome.
