Introduction. The aim of this study is to examine the feasibility of reducing postoperative hospital stay following open partial nephrectomy through the implementation of a goal directed clinical management pathway. Materials and Methods. A fast track clinical pathway for open partial nephrectomy was introduced in July 2006 at our institution. The pathway has daily goals and targets discharge f...

Angiomyolipoma is a benign neoplasm composed of varying admixtures of blood vessels, smooth muscle cells, and adipose tissue. Because of an increased risk of spontaneous haemorrhage, surgical approach is needed greater than 4-8 cm size. We here report our partial nephrectomy experience in the 24 cm size giant angiomyolipoma. 26-year-old woman referred to our clinic with a 24 cm size angiomyolip...

BACKGROUND The objective of the study is to compare complication rates of laparoscopic nephrectomy and open nephrectomy using a standardized classification method. METHODS We retrospectively included 843 patients from March 2006 to November 2012, of whom 88 had laparoscopic radical nephrectomy (LRN), 526 had open radical nephrectomy (ORN), 42 had laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (LPN), and 18...

PURPOSE To investigate the effect of intraoperative ultrasonographic (US) findings on the decision for the type of nephrectomy to be performed in patients who had renal tumors that were preoperatively evaluated by using magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, with pathologic results as the reference standard. MATERIALS AND METHODS The institutional review board approved the study protocol, and infor...

Indocyanine Green (ICG) is frequently used during urologic robotic procedures and is generally considered to be safe. However, there are reported cases of severe complications from ICG when used for non-urologic purposes. We present the first case to our knowledge of anaphylactic shock in response to intravenous ICG during a robotic partial nephrectomy.

PURPOSE To create a protocol for providing real-time operating room (OR) cost feedback to surgeons. We hypothesize that this protocol will reduce costs in a responsible way without sacrificing quality of care. METHODS All OR costs were obtained and recorded for robot-assisted partial nephrectomy and laparoscopic donor nephrectomy. Before the beginning of this project, costs pertaining to the ...

Partial nephrectomy in rats leads to an increase in the calcium content of the residual renal tissue. This increase is correlated with enlargement of the parathyroid glands, the degree depending upon the severity of the kidney lesions. Early removal of the parathyroid glands almost completely prevents this increase in kidney calcium.

The increased detection of small renal masses (SRMs) has focused attention on their uncertain natural history. The development of treatment alternatives and the discovery of biologically targeted drugs have also raised interest. Renal mass biopsies (RMBs) have a crucial role as they provide the pathological, molecular and genetic information needed to classify these lesions and guide clinical m...
