The velocity and acceleration of aortic blood flow were measured by means of a catheter velocity probe in 40 patients during routine diagnostic cardiac catheterization. Ten different variables were derived from the aortic velocity measurements, and their ability to discriminate between good and bad left ventricular (LV) function was tested. By means of eight conventional indices of LV function ...

We compute Casimir interaction energies for the sphere-plate and cylinder-plate configuration induced by scalar-field fluctuations with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Based on a high-precision calculation using world-line numerics, we quantitatively determine the validity bounds of the proximity-force approximation (PFA) on which the comparison between all corresponding experiments and theory a...

Silicalite-poly(furfuryl alcohol) [PFA] composite membranes were prepared by solution casting of silicalite-furfuryl alcohol [FA] suspension on a porous polysulfone substrate and subsequent in situ polymerization of FA. X-ray diffraction, nitrogen sorption, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used to characterize silicalite nan...

OBJECTIVE To examine the difference between schizophrenia patients and normal controls on velocity and acceleration of saccade, by using the basic visually guided saccade (VGS) paradigm. METHODS Eighteen schizophrenia outpatients and fourteen normal controls participated in the VGS task. Multiple indicators, including amplitude, duration, velocity, latency, accuracy rate, acceleration, and de...

A nanocomposite carbon was prepared by grafting a carbonizable polymer, poly(furfuryl alcohol) (PFA), to a single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT). The SWNT was first functionalized with arylsulfonic acid groups on the sidewall via a method using a diazonium reagent. Both Raman and FTIR spectroscopies were used to identify the functional groups on the nanotube surface. HRTEM imaging shows that the S...

The PFA-100 provides a simple global measure of high shear-dependent platelet function, and as such is not diagnostic or specific to any disorder. Prolonged closure times must be interpreted in conjunction with a full blood count, von Willebrand factor (VWF) screen and other platelet tests. The PFA-100 may also give false negative results with relatively common platelet defects. If clinical sus...

Velocity and acceleration characteristics provide valuable information about dynamic control of accommodation. We investigated velocity and acceleration of disaccommodation (near-far focusing) from three starting positions. Peak velocity and peak acceleration of disaccommodation increased with the proximity of starting position however for a given starting position they were invariant of respon...

Epidemiological data indicate that low n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PFA) intake is a readily manipulated dietary risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Studies in animals confirm the deleterious effect of n-3 PFA depletion on cognition and on dendritic scaffold proteins. Here, we show that in transgenic mice overexpressing the human AD gene APPswe (Tg2576), safflower oil-induced n-3 PFA ...

Topical foscarnet (PFA) and acyclovir (ACV) were compared in the dorsal cutaneous guinea pig model of herpes simplex virus type 1 infection. The relative order of efficacy was PFA cream greater than ACV cream greater than ACV ointment. In vitro studies demonstrated that PFA and ACV formulated in cream vehicles penetrated through guinea pig skin 7- to 10-fold faster than did ACV in ointment.

Patellofemoral arthroplasty (PFA) has been an option for patients with symptomatic patellofemoral osteoarthritis since the 1950's. Many of the early failures resulted from a combination of implant design and surgeon technique. The goal of this overview is not to review the history of PFA, but rather to explore options for surgeons to optimize long-term outcomes and improve patient knee function...
