BACKGROUND Human sperm DNA damage may adversely affect reproductive outcomes, and the spermatozoa of infertile men possess substantially more DNA damage than that of fertile men. To date, there is no available treatment for men with high levels of sperm DNA damage. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of varicocelectomy on sperm DNA denaturation (DD, an index of sperm DNA damag...

Both chronic pain and obesity are known to affect reproductive hormone profiles in male patients. However, the effect of these conditions, alone or in combination, on male fertility potential has received less attention. 20 chronic musculoskeletal pain patients and 20 healthy controls were divided into lean and overweight subgroups according to their BMI. Current level of chronic pain (visual a...

The objective of the present study was to estimate heritabilities and genetic correlations for semen and litter size traits using full animal model analyses. Litter size data were available from 28,485 Czech Large White and 10,410 Czech Landrace sows farrowing between 1995 and 2008. The number of litter records was 91,922 and 30,937, respectively. Records on semen traits (37,137 ejaculates from...

The purpose of this study was to characterize highly enriched human spermatozoa membrane proteins by two-dimensional electrophoresis and computer image analysis. Sperm membrane proteins were extracted by detergent solubilization from three different preparations: 1) washed semen cells following centrifugation and three wash steps in Ham's F-10 medium (the standard sperm preparation, which is co...

Previous work from our laboratory indicated that gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) increases human sperm-zona pellucida binding. Here we present evidence that GnRH antagonists inhibit sperm-zona pellucida binding in humans. Motile spermatozoa (10(7) cells/ml) were incubated in modified Tyrode's medium at 37 degrees C, in 5% CO(2) in air. After 4.5 h, aliquots of spermatozoa were treated wi...

The purpose of this study was to examine if selecting a sperm population with improved motion characteristics before freezing reduces the deleterious effects of cryopreservation. Semen specimens from 15 normal donors were divided into two equal aliquots. The first aliquot received no treatment (control), and the second was processed by swim-up from a washed sperm preparation to select a sperm p...

This work presents a specifically designed spiral type inertial micro-fluidic channel for separating non-motile sperm cell from cellular debris. Demonstration with a mixture of non-motile sperm and red blood cells showed that 82% of sperm could be focused into a separate outlet from the red blood cells.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of two variants of Tris-citric acid-fructose (TCF) extender containing whole hen egg yolk (TCF-HEY) and lyophilized lipoprotein fractions extracted from ostrich egg yolk (TCF-LPF(o)) on selected biological properties of cryopreserved sperm cells. Post-thaw percentage of motile sperm (MOT) was significantly higher (P < 0.05) for TCF-HEY extender ...

objective(s):the present study was undertaken to determine the effects of acute exposure to malathion on oxidative stress and cytotoxic potential of anticholinesterase insecticide, malathion in reproductive toxicology of adolescent male mice. materials and methods: thirty two adolescent male mice at pubertal age were treated with 500 mg/kg body weight (bw) of malathion for three days. after exp...
