This study focused on important characteristics of attentional (selective) processing in children with early-treated phenylketonuria (PKU). Seven to 14-year-old children with PKU were allocated to high phenylalanine (Phe) and low Phe groups and compared with control children on amplitudes and latencies of early and late event-related potential (ERP) components elicited during a selective proces...

BACKGROUND Previous studies have demonstrated that intrathecal administration of the substance P amino-terminal metabolite substance P1-7 (SP1-7) and its C-terminal amidated congener induced antihyperalgesic effects in diabetic mice. In this study, we studied a small synthetic dipeptide related to SP1-7 and endomorphin-2, i.e. Phe-Phe amide, using the tail-flick test and von Frey filament test ...

Blood phenylalanine (Phe) levels provide a practical and reliable method for the diagnosis and monitoring of metabolic status in patients with phenylketonuria (PKU). To assess the reliability of blood Phe levels as a predictive biomarker of clinical outcomes in the development of treatments for PKU, a systematic literature review and meta-analysis of published trials of PKU, which included Phe ...

Phenylketonuria (PKU) is caused by mutations in the phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) gene, leading to deficient conversion of phenylalanine (Phe) to tyrosine and accumulation of toxic levels of Phe. A Phe-restricted diet is essential to reduce blood Phe levels and prevent long-term neurological impairment and other adverse sequelae. This diet is commenced within the first few weeks of life and c...

The three-domain initiation module PheATE (GrsA) of Bacillus brevis gramicidin S synthetase catalyzes the activation, thiolation and epimerization of L-phenylalanine (L-Phe), the first amino acid incorporated into the decapeptide antibiotic gramicidin S. There are three activated intermediates in the PheATE catalyzed chemical pathway: L-phenylalanyl-adenosine-5'-monophosphate diester (L-Phe-AMP...

Here we demonstrate that the smallest possible motif of the amphiphilic and pleated β-strand structure can be generated using tri-peptides stabilized by π-π stacking interactions. Monitoring the early stages of Phe-Glu-Phe fibril formation revealed unique angular orientations. Phe-Glu-Phe fibrils were further exploited as adsorbing templates for metal ions.

Although several studies have suggested perihematomal edema(PHE) is associated with prognosis in intracerebral hemorrhage(ICH), the results are different in other studies. The purpose of this study to evaluate the prognostic role of PHE in ICH. According to PRISMA guidelines, a systematic literature search of PubMed, EMBASE, SCOPUS, Web of Science and Cochrane Library was performed. Published c...

We investigated the effects of low ouabain concentrations on systolic (SAP) and diastolic (DAP) arterial pressures and on pressor reactivity in 3-month-old male spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Arterial blood pressure (BP) and pressor reactivity to phenylephrine (PHE) were investigated before and after 0.18 microg/kg ouabain administration (N = 6). The influence of hexamethonium (N = 6), ...
