In this paper, we explore three different ways of developing T-Trefftz finite elements of quadrilateral as well as polygonal shapes. In all of these three approaches, in addition to assuming an inter-element compatible displacement field along the element boundary, an interior displacement field for each element is independently assumed as a linear combination of T-Trefftz trial functions. In a...
This paper introduces a new fixed mesh structural analysis technique based on isoparametric formulations from classic finite element analysis. Fixed mesh methods are popular in boundary based optimisation as they avoid mesh distortion problems and reanalysis is simple and efficient. The area ratio based fixed grid method is often employed due to its favourable simplicity in implementation. Howe...
Generating quadrilateral meshes is very important in many industrial applications such as finite element analysis and B-spline surface fitting. However, it is still a challenging task to design appropriate vertex connectivity in the quadrilateral meshes by respecting the shapes of the target object and its boundary. This paper presents an approach for interactively editing such mesh topology in...
Quadrilateral subdivision schemes come in primal and dual varieties, splitting faces or respectively vertices. The scheme of Catmull-Clark is an example of the former, while the Doo-Sabin scheme exemplifies the latter. In this paper we consider the construction of an increasing sequence of alternating primal/dual quadrilateral subdivision schemes based on a simple averaging approach. Beginning ...
This paper discusses a domain-based formulation for hybrid-Trefftz thick plate elements. The formulation can be applied to triangular and quadrilateral elements, and enables an analytical formulation of these elements to be used. Techniques for improving the computational efficiency are explored, and a simple and accurate triangular element is formulated in this manner.
This paper investigates the use of a steady state genetic algorithm (GA) to perform quadrilateral finite element mesh smoothing. GAS short for genetic algorithm smoother moves one to 64 nodes at the same time. GAs smooth as well as untangle (removing twisted and inverted elements), which has been a separate operation in the past.
