Our understanding of Earth's paleogeography relies heavily on paleomagnetic apparent polar wander paths (APWPs), which represent the time-dependent position spin axis relative to a given block lithosphere. However, conventional approaches APWP construction have significant limitations. First, record contains substantial noise that is not integrated into APWPs. Second, parametric assumptions are...

The acute torsion of wandering spleen is a very rare disease characterized by acute abdominal pain. Without early surgical intervention, wandering spleen can lead to splenic infarction or rupture. However, early clinical diagnosis is very difficult, so imaging modalities play an important role. We present a case of acute abdominal pain due to torsion of the wandering spleen in a 17-year-old gir...

Studies have suggested that the default mode network is active during mind wandering, which is often experienced intermittently during sustained attention tasks. Conversely, an anticorrelated task-positive network is thought to subserve various forms of attentional processing. Understanding how these two systems work together is central for understanding many forms of optimal and sub-optimal ta...

Wandering spleen is a rare cause of acute abdomen. Generally, it remains asymptomatic, it may present clinically as a painless mobile mass or rarely as an acute abdomen when the wandering spleen twists on its pedicle, resulting in splenic congestion, infarction with or without involvement of neighbouring visceras. Here, we present an unusual case of torsion of a wandering spleen, which resulted...

On geometrically finite negatively curved surfaces, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a one-sided horocycle (hu)s≥0 to be dense in the nonwandering set of the horocyclic flow. We prove that all dense one-sided orbits (hu)s≥0 are equidistributed, extending results of [Bu] and [Scha2] where symmetric horocycles (hu)−R≤s≤R were considered.

Recent research suggests that sleepiness and mind-wandering-the experience of thoughts that are both stimulus-independent and task-unrelated-frequently co-occur and are both associated with poorer cognitive functioning. Whether these two phenomena have distinguishable effects on task performance remains unknown, however. To investigate this question, we used the online experience sampling of mi...

Current research into mind-wandering is beginning to acknowledge that this process is one of heterogeneity. Following on from previous findings highlighting the role of self-focus during mind wandering, the present study aimed to examine individual differences in rumination and self-reflection and the impact such styles of self-focus may have on mind-wandering experiences. Thirty-three particip...

Mind-wandering or loss of focus is a frequently occurring experience for many learners and negatively impacts learning outcomes. While in a classroom setting, a skilled teacher may be able to react to students’ loss of focus, in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) no such intervention is possible (yet). Previous studies suggest a strong relationship between learners’ mind-wandering and their ga...

Recent findings have shown that mind-wandering - the occurrence of stimulus-independent and task-unrelated thoughts - is associated with negative affect and lower psychological well-being. However, it remains unclear whether this relationship is due to the occurrence of mind-wandering per se or to the fact that people who mind wander more tend to be generally less attentive to present-moment ex...

A stereotyped series of behavioural changes occurs in preparation for pupation in Manduca sexta. Feeding declines over an 8-h period, after which the larva coats its body with a labial gland secretion. The animal then begins a 10- to 30-h wandering behaviour during which it constructs a pupation chamber underground. Wandering behaviour starts during a specific temporal gate which is determined ...
