A 10 year old boy with Proteus syndrome presented with a pericardial effusion of unknown aetiology. Immunological investigation revealed low serum IgG and IgA, accompanied by low levels of specific antibodies to pneumococcal and haemophilus type B polysaccharides. Circulating lymphocyte surface marker profile revealed T and B cell lymphopenia. This is the first report of hypogammaglobulinaemia ...

A study has been made of the antibiotic sensitivity pattern of 96 strains of Proteus isolated from clinical material and a further 29 strains kindly supplied by Dr. Patricia Carpenter. The results have been analysed in relation to the different species. The effect of electrolytes on the penicillin sensitivity of Proteus species has also been examined.

We present a male infant with cranial hemi-hypertrophy, a lymphangioma, a lipoma, and epidermal naevi. A diagnosis of Proteus syndrome was made. His father had had a large lymphangioma resected from the right side of the face as a child. We propose that Proteus syndrome has been transmitted from father to son.

background and objective : selenium is essential for biological systems at low concentrations and toxic at higher levels. heavy metals and metalloids such as selenium are major contaminants in 40% of hazardous waste sites. thus, bioremediation has been considered as an effective means of cleaning up of selenium-contaminated sites. materials and methods : in this study, 30 strains were isolated ...

Rapid identification of Proteus species can represent a significant saving of time in the medical bacteriology laboratory. It is usually 2 days from receipt of the specimen to the reading of the differential slant. At this point, it is customary to inoculate one of the urea media (Edwards and Ewing, Identification of Enterobacteriaceae, Burgess Publishing Co., Minneapolis, 1955), read the resul...

The epidemiological study of several multidrug-resistant Enterobacteriaceae isolated from five patients demonstrated in vivo dissemination of a 100-kb plasmid encoding the extended-spectrum beta-lactamase TEM-24 from a clonal strain of Enterobacter aerogenes to different strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris, Proteus mirabilis, and Serratia marcescens.

Two ;multitest'(1) media for biochemical classification of the genus Proteus into species were developed. The species so determined were checked with conventional methods. Results show that these media were useful for rapid identification of species. The biochemical reactions of four Proteus species isolated from clinical specimens as tested by conventional methods are reviewed and the occurren...

A rare case of pulmonary pneumatoceles complicating the course of Proteus pneumonia in an adult is described. The pneumatoceles which appeared early in the course of the pneumonia resolved completely without complications. A brief review of the literature regarding formation of cavities in Proteus pneumonia is given.

Swabs were taken for culture from the periurethral area and urethral meatus in 124 uncircumcised and 60 circumcised boys. Proteus mirabilis was grown from 28 (22.6%) swabs from uncircumcised boys and from only one (1.7%) swab from circumcised boys. This supports the idea that the prepuce may be the source of proteus urinary tract infection.
