A QCD analysis of jet production in deep-inelastic scattering is presented. The studies are based on recent measurements of jet cross sections in the H1 experiment at HERA which are directly sensitive to the gluon density in the proton. The inclusion of H1 data on the inclusive deep-inelastic scattering cross section enables us to perform a consistent, simultaneous determination of the quark an...
A review of present knowledge about the scaling of the neutron and proton structure functions and about the neutron to proton cross section ratio is presented, Emphasis is placed on the results of a recent electron scattering experiment at SLAC from which neutron cross sections were extracted from deuterium data using an impulse approximation, The discovery of scaling' * in deep inelastic elect...
Using hydrogen and deuterium targets, Compton scattering by the proton and neutron have been studied at the tagged photon beam of the MAMI (Mainz) accelerator using different experimental setups. The theoretical tools for the analysis of the experimental data have been investigated, as there are the nonsubtracted dispersion theory and the theory of quasi-free reactions on the proton and neutron...
■ Abstract We review the study of the internal spin structure of the proton and neutron. High-energy scattering of polarized leptons by polarized protons, neutrons, and deuterons provides a measurement of the nucleon spin structure functions. These structure functions give information on the polarized quark contributions to the spin of the proton and the neutron and allow tests of the quark-par...
Hadronic nal states are analyzed with the ZEUS detector for deep inelastic di ractive scattering ep ! eXp, in which the virtual photon dissociates into a hadronic nal state of mass 4 < MX < 35 GeV and the scattered proton, carrying more than 95% of the initial proton momentum, is detected in the Leading Proton Spectrometer. The event shape variables thrust and sphericity are studied as a functi...
We present a bound on the imaginary part of the single helicity-flip amplitude for spin 1/2-spin 1/2 scattering at small momentum transfer. The variational method of Lagrange multipliers is employed to optimize the single-flip amplitude using the values of σtot, σel and diffraction slope as equality constraints in addition to the inequality constraints resulting from unitarity. Such bounds prov...
The present status of neutron-proton scattering in the energy range from 20-70 MeV is reviewed. The data base covers total cross sections, differential cross sections and polarization observables. The efforts after 1980 did largely cnncentrate on precision measurements of the differential cross sections and accurate vector analyzing powers, using polarized neutron beams. Because of correlations...
Recent measurements of recoil polarization in elastic scattering have been used to extract the ratio of the electric to the magnetic proton form factors. These results disagree with Rosenbluth extractions from cross section measurements, indicating either an inconsistency between the two techniques, or a problem with either the polarization transfer or cross section measurements. To obtain prec...
We show that, to a very good approximation, the ratio of the spin-flip to the non-flip parts of the elastic proton-nucleus amplitude is the same as for proton-nucleon scattering at very high energy. The result is used to do a realistic calculation of the analyzing power A N for pC scattering in the Coulomb-nuclear interference (CNI) region of momentum transfer.
Some proton-incident data have been published on elastic-scattering and total-reaction cross sections in the intermediate energy region. Such results as well as experimental data obtained by polarized proton beams are useful for parametrizing global optical model potentials in detail. In contrast, neutronincident experiments on elastic scattering are more difficult than proton ones, so that the...
