We experimentally characterize the ionic emission, including individual charge states Snz+ (z=1, …, 8), from laser-produced tin plasma as a function of intensity employed ns-pulsed laser. The is generated in vacuum microdroplets (diameter ranging 17 to 35 μm) using pulsed Nd:YAG laser light (laser wavelength λ=1.064 over range intensities (0.4–40×1010 W/cm2). measure charge-state-resolved and i...

Thermal lensing (TL) permits ultra-sensitive measurements of optical absorption of analytes in very small liquid volumes. We report the construction and use of a TL detector based on pulsed ultraviolet (UV) laser excitation (266 nm). We applied this detector to quantitate amino acids using capillary electrophoresis (CE) as a means of separation. Sixteen individual amino acids are readily detect...

Three-dimensional mapping of atmospheric atomic mercury has been performed with lidar techniques, to our knowledge, for the first time. Industrial pollution monitoring, as well as measurements of background concentrations, is reported. High-efficiency frequency doubling of narrowband pulsed dye laser radiation was employed to generate intense radiation at the mercury UV resonance line. Field me...

BACKGROUND Various lasers, particularly the flashlamp-pulsed dye laser, have been proven to be effective in the treatment of facial vascular lesions. Nevertheless, the post-treatment side effects, such as pronounced purpura and changes in pigmentation, have been a matter of concern to patients. OBJECTIVE To test the efficacy of an alternative treatment option that uses intense pulsed light to...

Introduction: There is a need for an instrument that can be used for remote in situ identification of biogenic and a-biogenic minerals, various types of ices, organic materials etc. on planetary surfaces. The potential for measuring remoteRaman spectra of organic [1] and inorganic materials and minerals [2] with a small telescope and CW lasers have been demonstrated. Pulsed-laser Raman spectros...

This is the first report, to our knowledge, of refractive-index grating side writing in 10 mol.% GeO(2)-doped fiber by the near-UV light of a cw Ar(+) laser (333-364 nm). An induced-index magnitude as large as 1.9 x 10(-4) at 1.7x10(5) W/cm(2) UV power density has been achieved. The observed gratings have exhibited the same temperature stability as gratings written by a KrF excimer laser (248 nm).

Heterostructures of thin titania films on BiFeO3 substrates were grown by pulsed laser deposition. The heterostructures, when excited by visible light with energies between 2.53 and 2.70 eV, photochemically reduce aqueous silver cations from solution in patterns that mimic the structure of the ferroelectric domains in the substrate. Under the same conditions, titania by itself reduces insignifi...

Adult humans’ recognition of self and others in diverse media (e.g., mirrors, videos) provides evidence for their skills at kinesthetic-visual and visual-visual matching, respectively. In this study, we examine selfand other-recognition in point-light displays (PLDs). Participants (7 men, 4 women) were filmed while walking in the dark with lighted joints to create two PLDs each, one showing a f...

This work reports on studies aimed to evaluate the utilization of ultrashort 238 femtoseconds (fs) pulsed UV laser emission at 343 nm for eliminating colored crusts and surface deposits significant Cretaceous flint surfaces, in an attempt safeguard its aesthetic appearance archaeological value. The results indicate that fs lasers may be ideal, non-contact tool selective cleaning sensitive artef...

Live cell studies of DNA repair mechanisms are greatly enhanced by new developments in real-time visualization of repair factors in living cells. Combined with recent advances in local sub-nuclear DNA damage induction procedures these methods have yielded detailed information on the dynamics of damage recognition and repair. Here we analyze and discuss the various types of DNA damage induced in...
