P pili are protein filaments expressed by uropathogenic Escherichia coli that mediate binding to glycolipids on epithelial cell surfaces, which is a prerequisite for bacterial infection. When a bacterium, attached to a cell surface, is exposed to external forces, the pili, which are composed of approximately 10(3) PapA protein subunits arranged in a helical conformation, can elongate by unfoldi...

Previous research has examined the consequences of either expressing or suppressing emotion using between-subjects designs. However, emotion theorists have argued that adaptation depends not so much on one regulatory process but rather on the ability to flexibly regulate emotion in accord with situational demands. To test this idea, Bonanno, Papa, Lalande, Westphal, and Coifman (2004) developed...

The conceptual understanding of museums as ‘contact zones’ has been widely appropriated in the museum literature and beyond. But the discussion lacks empirical insights into actual experiences: What does ‘contact’ mean for the person experiencing it? How is it lived, negotiated and contested? Drawing on a long-term narrative study of global visitors to the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarew...

Tumor suppressors block the development of cancer and are often lost during tumor development. Papa et al. show that partial loss of normal PTEN tumor suppressor function can be compounded by additional disruption caused by the expression of inactive mutant PTEN protein. This has significant implications for patients with PTEN gene mutations.
