A useful method for eliminating the detrimental effect of laser frequency instability on Brillouin signals by employing the self-heterodyne detection of Rayleigh and Brillouin scattering is presented. From the analysis of Brillouin scattering spectra from fibers with different lengths measured by heterodyne detection, the maximum usable pulse width immune to laser frequency instability is obtai...

This paper is focused on the application of hybrid Single relaxation time lattice Boltzmann and finite volume methods in conjunction with discrete ordinates method to simulate coupled natural convection and volumetric radiation in differentially heated enclosure, filled with an absorbing, emitting and non-scattering gray medium. In this work, the velocity and temperature fields are calculated u...

The theory of the double-edge technique is described by a generalized formulation that substantially extends the capabilities of the edge technique. It uses two edges with opposite slopes located about the laser frequency. This doubles the signal change for a given Doppler shift and yields a factor of 1.6 improvement in the measurement accuracy compared with the single-edge technique. Use of tw...

We demonstrate a submillisecond-response and scattering-free infrared phase modulator using a polymer network liquid crystal (PNLC). The required voltage for achieving 2π phase change at λ = 1.06 µm is 70V (or 5.8 V/μm) and the measured response time is ~200 µs at 25°C and 30 µs at 70°C. Opposite to our conventional understanding, a high viscosity LC helps to achieve small domain size during po...

Rayleigh scattering spectra and Raman spectra from single bundles of aligned single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been obtained with dark field optical microscopy and Raman microscopy. Rayleigh scattering spectrum reveals resonance peaks due to the optically allowed interband transitions in SWNTs. The intensity of the resonance peaks was found to depend strongly on the incident light polar...

We address the problem of using adaptive optics to deliver power from an airborne laser platform to a ground target through atmospheric turbulence under conditions of strong scintillation and anisoplanatism. We explore three options for creating a beacon for use in adaptive optics beam control: scattering laser energy from the target, using a single uncompensated Rayleigh beacon, and using a se...

Platinum nanoparticles (ptNPs) in the water are synthesized by nanosecond pulsed laser ablation of a pure platinum plate in the distilled water. Using hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) spectroscopy is observed considerable HRS responses. Pt nanoparticles do not have visible-region plasmon absorption, do not represent clear HRS signals, whereas surprisingly, they exhibit strong surface-enhanced Ra...

We consider the inverse scattering problem that arises in two-photon quantum imaging with interferometric measurements. We show that the two-point correlation function of the field contains information about the scattering medium at a spatial frequency of twice the Rayleigh bandwidth. The linearized inverse problem, however, yields reconstructions with a resolution of λ/2, where λ is the wavele...

The resonance phenomenon observed in Rayleigh wave scattering from surface-breaking cracks has been investigated using Freund's results on reflection of Rayleigh waves from an infinite crack edge. To model the crack as a section of acoustic waveguide, resonances are treated as standing waves in the length and depth directions. The model takes both faces of the crack into consideration, and this...

We investigate the near-field inverse scattering problem with evanescent waves. An analytic solution to this problem within the weak-scattering approximation is used to show that the usual Rayleigh limit may be overcome even when measurements are made without phase information. Applications to a novel form of three-dimensional microscopy with subwavelength resolution are described.
