Abdominal wall reconstruction ideally involves maintenance of domain by restoration of competent fascia and innervated muscle. Component separation allows closure of ventral hernias, but the technique is limited for high abdominal defects in the epigastric region. We describe an extended component separation that facilitated mobilization of the rectus abdominis muscle along its costal insertion...

The normal physiological loads from muscles experienced by the spine are largely unknown due to a lack of data. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of varying muscle directions on the outcomes predicted from finite element models of human lumbar spine. A nonlinear finite element model of L3-L5 was employed. The force of the erector spinae muscle, the force of the rectus abdomini...

DESCRIPTION A 56-year-old woman with previous breast cancer underwent a muscle-sparing transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous flap to her left breast. She developed marked flap swelling postoperatively and episodes of pyrexia. A breast wound swab grew Escherichia coli and Acinetobacter baumannii. This strain of Acinetobacter was multidrug resistant, including resistance to meropenem.

A rectus abdominis myocutaneous flap can provide a large amount of tissue for defect coverage. Rarely a flabby and redundant abdominal tissue was used as a huge extended flap. We report a case of recurrence malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the thigh which was radically resected. The resultant massive defect was success reconstructed with an extended pedicle inferiorly based rectus abdominis my...

PURPOSE We evaluated trunk muscle recruitment in abdominal and back exercises with magnetic resonance (MR) diffusion-weighted imaging. METHODS Twelve men performed bent-knee sit-up, crunch, trunk lateral flexion, and trunk extension exercises. We obtained axial diffusion-weighted images of the trunk before and after each exercise using a 1.5-tesla MR system, calculated apparent diffusion coef...

Deep sternal wound infection is a severe complication after open heart surgery. According to the different severity and dimensions of the deep sternal wound infection, the treatment method is different. In this study, we aimed to describe our experience with the rectus abdominis myocutaneous flap for large sternal wound management, especially when 1 or 2 internal mammary arteries were absent.Be...

Although measurement of abdominal strength is important for evaluating trunk myofunction, adequate devices for these measurements have not been developed. As a consequence, the relationships between abdominal strength and abdominal muscle thickness have also not been determined. This study aimed to develop a new device for measuring abdominal strength and to examine the relationship between abd...

Desmoid tumor of rectus abdominis presenting with Grey-Turner's and Cullen's sign is rare. Herein, we report desmoid tumor of rectus abdominis in a 64-year-old multiparous female who presented with ecchymosis involving left flank and around the umbilicus. Histopathological examination of biopsy from the tumor confirmed the diagnosis of the desmoid tumor. She was referred to a surgeon for radica...

The present study compared the muscle activity elicited by selected abdominal training devices with muscle activity elicited by a traditional crunch. Forty-six adults participated in the study. The exercise devices tested included the Ab-ONE, Perfect Abs Roller, Ab Scissor, Ab Swing, 6SecondAbs, and the Torso Track. For those devices with variable resistances, all were tested at their high resi...

The present study was conducted to determine the pattern of activation of the anterolateral abdominal muscles during the cough reflex. Electromyograms (EMGs) of the rectus abdominis, external oblique, internal oblique, transversus abdominis, and parasternal muscles were recorded along with gastric pressure in anesthetized cats. Cough was produced by mechanical stimulation of the lumen of the in...
