Abstract We describe a number theoretic view on binary shift registers. illustrate this approach some basic registers by revisiting known and obtaining new results, which we prove using tools from theory, including modular arithmetic.
We consider the problem of enumerating the number of irreducible transformation shift registers. We give an asymptotic formula for the number of irreducible transformation shift registers in some special cases. Moreover, we derive a short proof for the exact number of irreducible transformation shift registers of order two using a recent generalization of a theorem of Carlitz.
We give an adaptive algorithm in which processes use multi-writer multireader registers to acquire exclusive write access to their own single-writer, multi-reader registers. It is the first such algorithm that uses a number of registers linear in the number of participating processes. Previous adaptive algorithms require at least Θ(n)
Feedback with Carry Shift Registers (FCSRs) are a promising alternative to LFSRs in the design of stream cipher. The previous constructions based on FCSRs were dedicated to hardware applications [3]. In this paper, we will describe X-FCSR a family of software oriented stream cipher using FCSRs. The core of the system is composed of two 256-bits FCSRs. We propose two versions: X-FCSR-128 and X-F...
The F-FCSR stream cipher family has been presented a few years ago. Apart from some aws in the initial propositions, corrected in a later stage, there are no known weaknesses of the core of these algorithms. The hardware oriented version, called FCSR-H, is one of the ciphers selected for the eSTREAM portfolio. In this paper we present a new and severe cryptanalytic attack on the F-FCSR stream c...
Stream ciphers based on Linear Feedback Shift Registers (LFSRs) have faced algebraic attacks. To avoid this kind of attacks, Feedback with Carry Shift Registers (FCSRs) have been proposed as an alternative. In order to eliminate a so-called LFSRization weakness, FCSRs have been implemented using ring representation instead of the Galois one. A ring FCSR is determined by its transition matrix A....

Two forms of nonlinear-feedback shift-registers are considered. In the Type-I register, the feedback output is added to the shift-register contents at an arbitrary number of stages. In the type-11 register, the feedback is input to the first stage only. It is shown that for every Type-I register there is an equivalent Type-II register in the sense that the autonomous state diagrams differ only ...
This article considers some of the problems of the interpretation of information from other national arthroplasty registers when setting up a new register. In order for the most useful information to be available from registers much international co-operation is required between all those responsible for the design of registers as well as those who gather, assess and publish the data.
