Aims-To investigate the heterotypic adhesion of unactivated platelets to chemotactically responsive (migrated) and non-responsive (non-migrated) polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN).Methods-Platelets and PMN were isolated from autologous, normal blood. Migrated and non-migrated PMN were separated after N-formylmethionyl-leucylphenylalanine (FMLP) stimulation. Platelets were labelled with a fluor...

Responsive Link is a communication standard as specified in ISO/IEC 24740:2008 for distributed real-time environments. Responsive Link has multiple features to meet both hard and soft real-time requirements. Unfortunately, current real-time operating systems do not support the main features of Responsive Link. In addition, distributed realtime systems in noisy environments require revealing the...

Through a newly established Research Coordination Network for the Genomic Standards Consortium (RCN4GSC), the GSC will continue its leadership in establishing and integrating genomic standards through community-based efforts. These efforts, undertaken in the context of genomic and metagenomic research aim to ensure the electronic capture of all genomic data and to facilitate the achievement of ...

AIMS Delay reward discounting (DRD) measures the degree to which a person prefers smaller rewards soon or larger rewards later. People who smoke have been shown to have higher DRD. There are several ways of measuring DRD, and the method used might influence the association between smoking and DRD. The key differences are the order in which the items are presented, the delays used and the magnit...

One of the claimed benefits of embodied interaction is that it is an intuitive form of human–computer interaction. While this claim seems to be widely accepted, few studies explore the underlying cognitive mechanisms of intuition in the context of tangible and embedded interaction design. What is intuitive interaction? What makes an interface intuitive to use? We explore these questions in the ...

According to this electronic model, the transition state (TS) is stabilized by donor–acceptor orbital interactions from metal d orbitals to the substrate s*C X, which become more stabilizing as the metal–ligand d hybrid orbital is pushed up at smaller bite angles. Here, we provide evidence that the mechanism through which the bite angle affects barrier heights (and also the twist angle in the T...

A great deal of research has been done on the diurnal variations in different forms of animal and human activity. The first diurnal variation to be observed was the one in body temperature, and it is the one most widely recognized today. Similar diurnal variations have been observed in a series of other physical processes. Extensive surveys of the literature have been given by Holmgren (1936), ...

The Infrared Spatial Interferometer at University of California, Berkeley has been outÐtted with a Ðlter-bank system to allow interferometric observations of mid-infrared spectral lines with very high spectral resolution (j/*jD 105). This paper describes the design, implementation, and performance of the matched 32 channel Ðlter-bank modules, and new spectral-line observations of Mars and IRC ]...

Coterie, a visualization of online social interaction in IRC channels, provides a rich and highly informative display of social patterns. A viewer is presented with an explicit portrayal of the social patterns and interaction within a chat room through a live, dynamic, and aesthetic display of the activity within a channel mediated by historical interaction

The Xtra Amp tube, Isocode paper, Instagene matrix, and PrepMan matrix methods were evaluated for their ability to rapidly extract PCR-quality DNAs from Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Cryptosporidium parvum. All methods provided satisfactory DNA from E. coli, and the Xtra Amp and Instagene reagents provided satisfactory DNA from C. parvum.
