Pheochromocytoma is a rare and usually benign neuroendocrine neoplasm. Only 10% of all these tumors are malignant and there are no definitive histological or cytological criteria of malignancy. Single malignancy criteria are the presence of advanced locoregional disease or metastases. We report a case, with a giant retroperitoneal tumor having multiple metastases including palpable rib metastas...

A case of a large retroperitoneal tumor in a previously asymptomatic twenty-two-year-old white female is presented. A review of the literature confirms the rarity of this tumor. Its histologic and embryologic derivation as well as its subtle and bizarre method of presentation are discussed. We describe a case of hydronephrosis as a result of retroperitoneal fibrosis in a patient who had previous sclerosing lobulitis of the breast. To the best of our knowledge this is the first reported association between these two conditions in the english literature. We presume these conditions are linked and unify them under the general heading of systemic multifocal fibrosclerosis.

In this issue of The Lancet Oncology, Issels and colleagues1 describe a large, randomised phase 3 study assessing the effects of local hyperthermia in addition to chemotherapy and local therapy (surgery whenever possible with or without radiation) in a group of selected patients with intermediate or high-grade soft-tissue sarcomas greater than 5 cm, and deep.1 The trial was a multicentre study,...

A 49-year-old male patient underwent an exploratory laparoscopy for a lumbosacral prevertebral mass which caused right hydronephrosis by extrinsic ureteral stricture. The diagnosis of idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis (IRPF) was made by the laparoscopic biopsy. We then proceeded to perform successfully laparoscopic ureterolysis and intraperitonealization of the ureter on the patient. Laparosc...
