Magnetorheological (MR) dampers have a virtue over conventional dampers, where their damping properties can be adjusted using magnetic field. However, MR been barely implemented in small vibratory systems, which the modal mass and stiffness are relatively small. This is due to two major reasons, namely its high parasitic force big moving mass. When such an damper installed system, system‘s defa...

Abstract Magnetorheological (MR) fluid based dampers have been established as an alternative to classical hydraulic with proportional electromagnetic valves under vibration processes which demand adaptive damping forces. Almost all MR-dampers are spatially 1-degree-of-freedom (DOF) dampers, having only one axis or direction of force generation. In many technical applications there exist movemen...

The rheological and magnetic properties of several commercial magnetorheological (MR) fluids are presented and discussed. These fluids are compared using appropriate figures of merit based on conventional design paradigms. Some contemporary applications of MR fluids are discussed. These applications illustrate how various material properties may be balanced to provide optimal performance.

Magnetorheological dampers have raised as promising devices for structural seismic protection since they have many attractive features such as small power requirements, reliability, and relatively low cost. These devices have strongly nonlinear behaviour which is very difficult to characterize. For this reason, the modelling of MR dampers has been an active field during the last years and has p...
