In this work, we show that the eigenvalues of the problem  (∆2 + V (x) + λ)u(x) = 0 x ∈ Ω u(x) = ∆u(x) = 0 x ∈ ∂Ω are generically simple in the set of C4 regular regions of Rn, n ≥ 2. In fact, we prove that there exists a residual set of regions C4 diffeomorphic to a given Ω such that all the eigenvalues for a supported plate equation are simple.

p, li {white-space: prewrap;} Tungsten (W) is an important material for high temperature applications due to its refractory nature. However, like all transition metals from the VI-A group, W suffers from low-temperature brittleness and lack of ductility, which severely limits its use as a structural material. Tungsten’s mechanical properties can be enhanced by alloying with elements with d-elec...

We investigated the adsorption of a single atom, hydrogen and aluminum, on single-wall carbon nanotubes from first principles. The adsorption is exothermic, and the associated binding energy varies inversely as the radius of the zigzag tube. We found that the adsorption of a single atom and related properties can be modified continuously and reversibly by the external radial deformation. The bi...

Folds on the surfaces of mafic lavas are among most readily recognized geological structures and used as first-order criteria for identifying ancient Earth other planetary bodies. However, presence surface-folds surface silicic is contested in this study we challenge widely accepted interpretation that lava contain folds using examples from western United States Sardinia, Italy. We interpret ri...

With the increasing complexity of photo-realistic scenes, the question of building and placing objects in three-dimensional scenes is becoming ever more di cult. While the question of placement of rigid objects has captured the attention of researchers in the past, this work presents an intuitive and interactive scheme to properly place deformable objects with the aid of free-form deformation t...

Additional data on the synlophe and morphological measurements are provided for the heligmonellids Stilestrongylus aculeata (Travassos, 1918) and Stilestrongylus eta (Travassos, 1937), collected from Akodon montensis Thomas, 1913, of the Atlantic Forest, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The synlophe of S. aculeata is characterized by 19 cuticular middle body ridges in males and 24 cuticular middle body ...

A recent report by Scheibert et al. highlights the role of fingerprints in enhancing tactile sensitivity. By scanning a surface with a biometric force sensor they demonstrate the dominance of the frequencies that fall within the optimal sensitivity range of Pacinian afferents. The sensor, in this study, has a soft cover patterned with parallel ridges-mimicking the fingerprints. However, the ski...

Introduction: Many workers have described the thumb-print terrain (TT)—terrain consisting of nested curvilinear features visible throughout much of the Northern hemisphere of Mars in Viking data (see Fig. 1)—and the troughs with medial ridges frequently associated with that terrain [1-7, see references within]. Interpretations of TT have included: accumulations of eolian deposits; ice-shoved gl...

We have investigated the formation of a nickel oxide monolayer on Rh(111) by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This monolayer displays a corrugated (6 × 1) superstructure, with a formal Ni5O5 stoichiometry. The interplay between polarity and interface energy leads to the formation of...

Origami structures are mechanical metamaterials with properties that arise almost exclusively from the geometry of the constituent folds and the constraint of piecewise isometric deformations. Here we characterize the geometry and planar and nonplanar effective elastic response of a simple periodically folded Miura-ori structure, which is composed of identical unit cells of mountain and valley ...
