A novel method for indole skeleton synthesis under mild conditions mediated by samarium(ii) diiodide has been developed. The reaction of N-allenyl-2-iodoaniline derivatives with SmI2 in the presence of HMPA and i-PrOH at 0 °C afforded indole derivatives in high yields.
The preparation of a series of homoleptic, four-coordinate lanthanide(ii) complexes, [Ln(Priso)(2)] (Ln = Sm, Eu or Yb) incorporating the bulky guanidinate ligand Priso(-) ([(ArN)(2)CNPr(i)(2)](-), Ar = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl) is described. X-ray crystallography shows the complexes to be isostructural and to exhibit coordination geometries midway between tetrahedral and planar. Comparisons betwe...
An intriguing cell concept by applying proton-conducting oxide as the ionic conducting phase in the anode and taking advantage of beneficial interfacial reaction between anode and electrolyte is proposed to successfully achieve both high open circuit voltage (OCV) and power output for SOFCs with thin-film samarium doped ceria (SDC) electrolyte at temperatures higher than 600 °C. The fuel cells ...
Abstract Electric vehicles are sometimes marketed unambiguously as low-carbon technologies; however, they often contain less ‘clean’ ingredients, such rare earth permanent magnets. In fact, high-performance magnets in electric use neodymium. Alternatively, more costly samarium-cobalt can be used. this paper, life cycle assessment is used to compare the primary production routes of both neodymiu...
Nanoscale superlattices of samarium-doped ceria layers with varying doping levels have been recently proposed as a novel fuel cell electrolyte. We calculate the equilibrium composition profile across the coherent {100} interfaces present in this system using lattice-gas Monte Carlo simulations with long-range interactions determined from electrostatics and short-range interactions obtained from...
For martensitic transformations the macroscopic crystal strain is directly related to the corresponding structural rearrangement at the microscopic level. In situ optical microscopy observations of the interface migration and the change in crystal shape during a displacive single crystal to single crystal transformation can contribute significantly to understanding the mechanism of the process ...

Heavy nuclei exhibit a crossover from vibrational to rotational collectivity as the number of neutrons or protons increases from shell closure towards midshell, but the microscopic description of this crossover has been a major challenge. We apply the shell model Monte Carlo approach to families of even-even samarium and neodymium isotopes and identify a microscopic signature of the crossover f...
In this study powder reflectance spectra as well temperature dependent magnetic susceptibilities of eight different samarium(III) oxo-compounds (SmP5O14, SmPO4, SmVO4, SmNbO4, SmTaO4, Sm2Ti2O7, SmAsO4, B-type Sm2O3 and C-type Sm2O3) have been measured. addition, high-resolution electronic absorption in the near infrared single crystals seven these compounds are reported. Comparing our experimen...
The mass transfer performance of a pulsed disc and doughnut column for extraction of samarium and gadolinium from aqueous nitrate solution with D2EHPA was investigated. The effects of operating parameters such as pulsation intensity, continuous and dispersed phase velocities on column performance were investigated. The axial dispersion model was used to obtain the overall mass transfer coef...
