How do myelinated axons signal to the nuclei of cells that enwrap them? The cell bodies of oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells are segregated from axons by multiple layers of bimolecular lipid leaflet and myelin proteins. Conventional signal transduction strategies would seem inadequate to the challenge without special adaptations. Wallerian degeneration provides a model to study axon-to-Schwann...

Nerves containing numerous Schwann but their satellite Schwann cells appear cells can be found in bone marrow with well stained. Histological, cytological routine histological methods. Thin nerve and ultrastructural characteristics of these bundles and single nerve fibers containcells are described in detail. Blooding Schwann cells can be identified histoforming cells and nerve fibers with thei...

Schwann cells are primarily discussed in the context of their ability to form myelin. However there are many subtypes of these neural crest derived cells including satellite cells of the dorsal root ganglia and autonomic ganglia, the perisynaptic Schwann cells of the neuromuscular junction and the non-myelin forming Schwann cells which ensheathe the unmyelinated fibres of the peripheral nervous...

Peripheral nerves in dystrophic mice express multiple axon ensheathment abnormalities. If an intrinsic deficiency expressed within the Schwann cells themselves were to account for this neuropathy, then such cells, existing in a chimera preparation, would be expected to express the same ensheathment abnormalities, whereas a coexisting population of non-dystrophic Schwann cells should not be simi...

BACKGROUND Myelin is critical for efficient axonal conduction in the vertebrate nervous system. Neuregulin (Nrg) ligands and their ErbB receptors are required for the development of Schwann cells, the glial cells that form myelin in the peripheral nervous system. Previous studies have not determined whether Nrg-ErbB signaling is essential in vivo for Schwann cell fate specification, proliferati...

Peripheral myelination is a dynamic process orchestrated by axons and Schwann cells. Although the signaling mechanisms governing myelination are not fully understood, NF-κB activation in Schwann cells has been implicated as a key regulator in vitro. Using a mouse model, we show that nuclear factor κB activation in Schwann cells is not required for myelination in vivo.

Neonatal rat Schwann cells were grown in tissue culture and assayed for NGF receptors with time in culture. NGF receptor levels on freshly prepared Schwann cells (day 0) were low but increased dramatically during the first week in culture. Characterization of 125I-NGF binding to resuspended cells grown for 4 d in culture revealed that binding was not saturable at high ligand concentrations (50-...

The presence of melanin granules in Schwann cells of unmyelinated nerve fibres in the normal skin of a black woman is demonstrated by electron microscopy. Pathological conditions associated with the differentiation ability of Schwann cells for melanogenic are reviewed. This capacity may be due to the common origin of Schwann cells and melanocytes in the neural crest.

The myelin sheaths that surround the thick axons of the peripheral nervous system are produced by the highly specialized Schwann cells. Differentiation of Schwann cells and myelination occur in discrete steps. Each of these requires coordinated expression of specific proteins in a precise sequence, yet the regulatory mechanisms controlling protein expression during these events are incompletely...

To bring insights into neurofibroma biochemistry, a comprehensive secretome analysis was performed on cultured human primary Schwann cells isolated from surgically resected plexiform neurofibroma and from normal nerve tissue. Using a combination of SDS-PAGE and high precision LC-MS/MS, 907 proteins were confidently identified in the conditioned media of Schwann cell cultures combined. Label fre...
