In this paper, we show that adult listeners who speak the same native language but live in different linguistic environments differ in their use of prosodic cues that signal word boundaries in the native language. Non-utterance-final word-final syllables have higher fundamental frequency in French. Adult native French listeners living in France or in the US completed an artificial-language segm...

Long-lasting interference effects in picture naming are induced when objects are presented in categorically related contexts in both continuous and blocked cyclic paradigms. Less consistent context effects have been reported when the task is changed to semantic classification. Experiment 1 confirmed the recent finding of cumulative facilitation in the continuous paradigm with living/non-living ...

There is combinatorial order of ambiguities in each level of natural language analysis, such as the morphology, syntax, and semantic levels. Moreover, much of the linguistic knowledge in each level is preference knowledge and has mutual interference. Deterministic processing is usually introduced to avoid the combinatorial explosion. However, this restricts the ability of natural language proce...

In this paper we propose a certification technique for noninterference of Java programs based on rewriting logic, a very general logical and semantic framework efficiently implemented in the high-level programming language Maude. Non–interference is a semantic program property that prevents illicit information flow to happen. Starting from a basic specification of the semantics of Java written ...

An interactive system is a system that allows communication with the users. This communication is modeled through input and output actions. Input actions are controllable by a user of the system, while output actions are controllable by the system. Standard semantics for sequential system [1, 2] are not suitable in this context because they do not distinguish between the different kinds of acti...

In the picture-word interference task, two context effects can be distinguished: the semantic interference effect and the orthographic facilitation effect. A theory is described to explain these effects. This theory was implemented in a connectionist model. The model is able to simulate the time courses of the two context effects and their interaction.

The claim that lexical access for visual words is mandatorily mediated by their phonological codes was investigated. One hundred-four participants performed timed naming responses to pictures while instructed to ignore printed words superimposed on the pictures. Distractor words were either semantically related to the picture label or were homophones of a word semantically related to the pictur...

Two experiments investigate the effect of number congruency using picture-word interference. Native German participants were required to name pictures of single objects (Nase 'nose') or two instances of the same object (Nasen 'noses') while ignoring simultaneously presented distractor words. Distractor words either had the same number or were different in number. In addition, the type of plural...

A common explanation for the interference effect in the classic visual Stroop test is that reading a word (the more automatic semantic response) must be suppressed in favor of naming the text color (the slower sensory response). Neuroimaging studies also consistently report anterior cingulate/medial frontal, lateral prefrontal, and anterior insular structures as key components of a network for ...

Impairment in delayed recall has traditionally been considered a hallmark feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, vulnerability to semantic interference may reflect early manifestations of the disorder. In this study, 26 mildly demented AD patients (mild AD), 53 patients with mild cognitive impairment without dementia (MCI), and 53 normal community-dwelling elders were first presented 10 ...
