Open Educational Resources (OER) give an openly available set of content and tools that in principle provide a basis for formal and informal communication and collaboration between groups of individuals around teaching and/or learning. In practice, most communication and collaboration around OER appears to be asynchronous, loosely connected and not sustained. The success of social networking si...
We present the design of a visualization tool which can be incorporated in parallel/ distributed code to track computational parameters with respect to convergence and the distribution of the work remaining for the parallel processes. We describe its functionality, algorithms and implementation in Java, as it is applied to a package for multivariate integration. Implementation aspects include m...
This chapter discusses activity coordination in distributed working environments. Cooperation between geographically dispersed locations is based on asynchronous, lowbandwidth communication. Due to periodic disconnection, decisions for commonly processed activities may have to be made on one’s own without the possibility of further consultation. Necessary information may not be available which ...
This paper studies the effect of high performance pipelined GF(2 256 ) bit-serial multiplier on elliptic curve point operations. A 3-stage pipelined version of the Massy-Omura GF(2 m ) normal basis multiplier for 160 ≤ m ≤ 256 was studied in terms of area overhead and throughput improvement. Simple gate area and delay models were used to estimate the throughput of the pipelined and the non-pipe...
The relationship between interaction and learning is a central concern of the learning sciences, and analysis of interaction has emerged as a major theme within the current literature on computersupported collaborative learning. The nature of technology-mediated interaction poses analytic challenges. Interaction may be distributed across actors, space, and time, and vary from synchronous, quasi...
This paper studies the usage of broadcast communication in distributed services. The approach taken is practical: all the algorithms are asynchronous, and tolerate realistic faults. We study four problems in a broadcast domain: clock synchronization, reliable and ordered broadcast , membership, and le replication. The clock synchronization algorithm shows for the rst time how to utilize broadca...
1 Abstract Data freshness properties of asynchronous communication mechanisms (ACMs) are related to the relative timing of reader and writer statements. When a hardware implementation of an ACM is tested at the highest operating speed, such relative timing is difficult to measure if the observing hardware is not constructed of faster technology than the ACM. Here an indirect method is proposed ...
Design and characterization of a 13 bit serial-to-parallel converter in GaAs technology for smart antennas are presented. The circuit has been realized with NOR-based super-buffered enhancement/depletion logic, and optimized for a compact layout. The serial-to-parallel converter operates properly well above the 20 kHz design clock frequency.
The design of high-speed slotted networks requires the development of complex simulators for the evaluation of the system and protocol performance. The straightforward event-driven (asynchronous) approach for modeling a highspeed system becomes unfortunately more and more inefficient as the number of slots concurrently propagating in the network grows. This is due to the increasing number of ev...
A new definition and classification of motion is presented and elaborated herein along with a method of clock synchronization. Additionally, Einstein's clocks are shown to be asynchronous. The impact of this on special relativity theory and one-way light isotropy is discussed.
