Clionaterpene (1), a new cadinene sesquiterpene, along with six known compounds 2–7 were isolated from the marine sponge Cliona sp. The structure of 1 absolute configuration was determined by spectroscopic data (UV, IR, MS, and NMR) quantum chemical calculation. Compound first sesquiterpene metabolite this genus. In addition, cytotoxic antibacterial activities these evaluated. However, none the...

The synthesis of functionalized 2-oxo-2H-coumarin derivatives has been studied by a one-pot reaction of o-hydroxybenzaldehyde, ethyl 2-bromoacetate and triphenylphosphine in the presence of catalytic amount of triethyl amine in EtOAc, water or under solvent free conditions. We have found the best results obtained under solvent free condition.

Smallanthus sonchifolius (Poepp.) H. Rob., Asteraceae, known as yacon, is an herb that is traditionally used for the treatment of diabetes in folk medicine. However, recent studies have demonstrated that this plant has other interesting properties such as anti-microbial and anti-infl ammatory actions. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the topical anti-infl ammatory property of dif...

Segregation analysis between Lysopersicon esculentum (cultivated tomato) and L. hirsutum (wild form) in conjunction with positional verification by using near-isogenic lines demonstrated that biosynthesis of two structurally different classes of sesquiterpenes in these species is controlled by loci on two different chromosomes. A locus on chromosome 6, Sesquiterpene synthase1 (Sst1), was identi...

Several naturally occurring coumarins to which humans are routinely exposed have been previously found to be potent inhibitors and inactivators of cytochrome P450 (P450) 1A1-mediated monooxygenase in both murine hepatic microsomes and in a reconstituted system using purified human P450 1A1 [Cai et al. (1993) Chem. Res. Toxicol., 6, 872-879 and Cai et al. (1996) Chem. Res. Toxicol., 9, 729-736]....

A new eudesmane-type sesquiterpene, 11-hydroxycapitulatin B (1), along with a known related sesquiterpene, capitulatin B (2), was isolated from the endophytic fungus Nigrospora oryzae A8 from Aquilaria sinensis, the only plant resource for agarwood production in China. This research demonstrates that the endophytic fungi from A. sinensis might play a role in the formation of agarwood.

A transformed root culture of Cichorium intybus L. (Asteraceae) was found to produce sesquiterpene lactones of guaiane and germacrane type. Lactucopicrin, 8-desoxylactucin and three sesquiterpene lactone glycosides: crepidiaside B, sonchuside A and ixerisoside D were isolated from the roots. The yield of 8-desoxylactucin reached 0.03 g l(-1) at the early stationary phase of the culture.

The epimeric sesquiterpene alcohols (14R)-beta-oplopenol and (14S)-beta-oplopenolwere obtained by LiAlH(4) reduction of beta-oplopenone. The complete (1)H- and (13)C-NMR assignments of these two new sesquiterpene alcohols have been made using 1D and 2D NMR techniques, including COSY, NOESY, HSQC, HMBC experiments.
