We report here on the development and validation of a prototype Invader Plus method for the qualitative detection of herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The method combines PCR and Invader techniques in a single, closed-tube, continuous-reaction format that gives an analytical sensitivity of approximately 10 copies per reaction. The clinical sensitivity and specific...

The indirect immunoperoxidase technique with type-specific antisera was compared to kinetic neutralization for the typing of herpes simplex virus strains. There was complete agreement between the results obtained by kinetic neutralization and indirect immunoperoxidase. The indirect immunoperoxidase assay was far simpler to perform and interpret than the kinetic neutralization tests, and it offe...

Erythema multiforme of the mouth is an acute vesiculo-ulcerative lesion, which presents a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge to the clinician. Herpes simplex is described as the most frequent cause of this disease. Controversy exists in the literature as to the definition of oral erythema multiforme and the role of systemic corticosteroids in its treatment. Recent treatment protocols advocate...

Skin infections in wrestling have escalated in the past 20 yr. Failure to recognize and manage primary or recurrent herpes gladiatorum (HG) puts all wrestlers who come in direct contact with the affected athlete at risk. In 2007, a major outbreak of HG occurred during the Minnesota State High School wrestling season. Rapid response to the outbreak based upon lessons learned from previous episod...

A series of new cyclohexenyl nucleosides is synthesized by coupling the heterocyclic bases with a protected cyclohexenyl precursor under Mitsunobu conditions. The compounds were evaluated for their antiviral and cytostatic activity. Pronounced activity against herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 2 was observed for the 2,6-diaminopurine analogue.

As infection with herpes simplex virus appears to be more common than was formerly supposed, laboratory confirmation of the role of this virus in lesions of the mouth, central nervous system, skin, and liver is being sought more often. The simplest laboratory method for diagnosis is by the complement-fixation test, and a number of different methods of making antigen have been recommended since ...

Pretreatment of HeLa cells with human interferon (IFN) resulted in the inhibition of herpes simplex virus (HSV) replication. We examined the stages in the replication of HSV type 1 and type 2 that were affected by IFN. The rate of synthesis of the HSV immediate-early (alpha) proteins was inhibited in IFN-pretreated HeLa cells. The subsequent inductions of HSV early (beta) genes, determined by m...

Infection of BALB/c mouse cells with UV-irradiated herpes simplex virus (HSV) types 1 and 2 resulted in activation of a xenotropic type C virus detected by infectious center formation in permissive rat cells. The levels of type C virus activated by HSV were related to the UV dose and the multiplicity of infection used. The ability of HSV to activate type C virus was eliminated by heat-inactivat...

the name herpes comes from the greek herpein—“to creep.” Members of the Herpesviridae family have been identified in a variety of animals and they all share certain features, including an ability to establish latency following primary infection, as well as a potential to reactivate and cause further disease. Herpesviruses have large genomes and contain approximately 35 virion genes—all of which...

Human Herpesvirus 1 known as herpes simplex virus type (HSV-1) is belonged to the Herpesviridae family, Alphaherpesvirinae subfamily, and Simplexvirus genus. Kyllinga nemoralis, whitehead spike sedge, white kyllinga, globose spike, or poverty grass, a monocotyledonous flowering graminoid similar grasses rushes. Acyclovir (ACV) did not eradicate HSV-1 infection drug only focuses on inhibiting pr...
