We are developing tangible imaging systems that enable natural interaction with virtual objects. Tangible imaging systems are based on consumer mobile devices that incorporate electronic displays, graphics hardware, accelerometers, gyroscopes, and digital cameras, in laptop or tablet-shaped form-factors. Custom software allows the orientation of a device and the position of the observer to be t...

In this paper, we propose a Tangible User Interface which enables users to use applications on a PC desktop in the same way as a paper and pen on a desk in the real world. Also, the proposed system is cheaper to implement and can be easily setup anywhere. By using the proposed system, we found that it was easier to use than normal application user interfaces.

Digital Montessori-inspired Manipulatives (MiMs), so far have been used effectively for knowledge transfer in elementary educational settings. For work modelling and task-based interactive systems design we propose a modelling concept and usage scenario that should help to increase effectiveness in organization and technology development. The Tangible Task Modelling Demonstrator (TTMD) facilita...

Physical models of biomolecular components and their interactions are extraordinarily useful aids in understanding complex biological structure and organization. With our collaborators at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) and the University of Utah we are exploring the production of such models through autofabrication technology, and augmenting them with a variety of interface modalities, i...

People are able to determine whether or not a given document is interesting just by glancing through it. However, when asked to make explicit the rules upon which such a decision is based, they are unable to do so. This, I argue, is because tacit knowledge is involved in this process. Tacit knowledge constituted the major part of the body of knowledge and it is therefore important for organisat...

The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether stock/flow failures persist in naturalistic decision making environments. A tangible stock/flow experiment is used in this study, which asks participants to pour a certain amount of water into a glass through a funnel in an as short time as possible. Findings are that people on average do not perform better in a tangible stock/flow task than i...

Most current devices are passive regarding their locations by being integrated in the environment or require to be carried when used in mobile scenarios. In this paper we present a novel type of self-actuated devices, which can be placed on vertical surfaces like whiteboards or walls. This enables vertical tangible interaction as well as the device interacting with the user through selfactuated...

JunctionBox is a new software toolkit for creating multitouch interfaces for controlling sound and music. More specifically, the toolkit has special features which make it easy to create TUIO-based touch interfaces for controlling sound engines via Open Sound Control. Programmers using the toolkit have a great deal of freedom to create highly customized interfaces that work on a variety of hard...
