Doxycycline is a tetracycline that has been licensed for veterinary use in some countries, but no clinical breakpoints are available for veterinary pathogens. The objectives of this study were (i) to establish breakpoints for doxycycline and (ii) to evaluate the use of tetracycline as a surrogate to predict the doxycycline susceptibility of Staphylococcus pseudintermedius isolates. MICs and inh...

Neisseria gonorrhoeae becomes resistant to tetracycline by two major mechanisms: expression of a plasmid-encoded TetM protein and mutations in endogenous genes (chromosomally mediated resistance). Early studies by Sparling and colleagues (P. F. Sparling F. A. J. Sarubbi, and E. Blackman, J. Bacteriol. 124:740-749, 1975) demonstrated that three genes were involved in high-level chromosomally med...

This study describes the results of a randomized clinical trial investigating the effect of oxytetracycline treatment dose and mode of administration on the selection of antibiotic-resistant coliform bacteria in fecal samples from nursery pigs. Nursery pigs (pigs of 4 to 7 weeks of age) in five pig herds were treated with oxytetracycline for Lawsonia intracellularis-induced diarrhea. Each group...

Two tetracycline-resistant Fusobacterium nucleatum strains were able to transfer, by conjugation, tetracycline resistance and the Tet M determinant to recipient F. nucleatum, Peptostreptococcus anaerobius, and Enterococcus faecalis strains at a frequency of 10(-1) to 10(-8).

GAR-936 is a new semisynthetic glycylcycline with a broad antibacterial spectrum, including tetracycline-resistant strains. The in vitro activities of GAR-936, minocycline, doxycycline, tetracycline, moxifloxacin, penicillin G, and erythromycin were determined by agar dilution methods against 268 aerobic and 148 anaerobic strains of bacteria (including Pasteurella, Eikenella, Moraxella, Bergeye...

objective(s): the major antibiotic efflux pump of esherichia coli is acrab-tolc. the first part of the pump, acrab, is encoded by acrab operon. the expression of this operon can be kept elevated by overexpression of an activator, mara following inactivation of marr and acrr repressors due to mutation in encoding genes, marr and acrr, respectively. the aims of this research were to use e. coli m...

OBJECTIVES Laribacter hongkongensis is a newly discovered bacterium associated with gastroenteritis and found in freshwater fish. Although isolates resistant to tetracycline have been described, their resistance mechanisms have not been studied. PATIENTS AND METHODS We describe the distribution and molecular characterization of tetracycline resistance in 48 L. hongkongensis isolates from huma...

The tetracycline resistance element of plasmid pBR322 partially complements the potassium transport defect of Escherichia coli K-12 mutants having markedly impaired K+ transport. The plasmid increases K+ transport. The Tn10 element does not result in increased transport, demonstrating that the effect is not general for elements that increase resistance to tetracycline.
