The performance of the Pneupac Ventipac portable gas-powered ventilator was evaluated in two stages. The accuracy of delivery of the ventilator was assessed using a mechanical lung model at different combinations of compliance and airway resistance to simulate normal and diseased lungs. The performance of the ventilator was then assessed in 20 anaesthetized patients. The tidal volume delivered ...

VentPlan is an implementation of the architecture developed by the qualitative-quantitative (QQ) research group for combining qualitative and quantitative computation in a ventilator-management advisor (VMA). VentPlan calculates recommended settings for four controls of a ventilator by evaluating the predicted effects of alternative ventilator settings. A belief network converts clinical diagno...

Ventilator-associated pneumonia is a common nosocomial infection that results in both negative patient outcomes and increased health care costs. Recently, many efforts have been targeted at ventilator-associated pneumonia prevention, including the practice of subglottic secretion aspiration. Six randomized control studies examining the effectiveness of subglottic secretion aspiration in the pre...

This study proposes a method for determining obstruction of the endotracheal tube (ET) and its degree location. Respiratory signals were acquired using three sensor (microphone, pressure, flow) integrated connector. Obstruction classification involved pre-processing feature extraction. During pre-processing, one cycle respiratory signal was extracted extraction phase segmentation. The then divi...

BACKGROUND We aimed (1) to describe the characteristics of patient-ventilator asynchrony in a population of critically ill children, (2) to describe the risk factors associated with patient-ventilator asynchrony, and (3) to evaluate the association between patient-ventilator asynchrony and ventilator-free days at day 28. METHODS In this single-center prospective study, consecutive children ad...

Neurally adjusted ventilatory assist operates through recordings of electrical activity of the diaphragm (EAdi). Barwing and colleagues found increases in EAdi in weaning-failure patients, although the values were not significantly different from weaning-success patients. Future studies will need to carefully control for the considerable biological noise evident in EAdi recordings.

Ventilator management strategies can affect the risk for ventilator-associated pneumonia in 3 ways: the development of ventilator-induced lung injury; the need for potentially harmful tradeoffs in providing lung-protective ventilatory strategies; and the prolongation of the duration of mechanical ventilation from iatrogenic factors. Strategies to reduce ventilator-induced lung injury include a ...

During this COVID-19 pandemic time, an unprecedented number of patients with severe respiratory illness require intensive care units (ICUs) under mechanical ventilation (MV) for sustaining life. Patient–ventilator asynchrony (PVA) is very common, and it occurs due to the mismatch between normal variability patients’ breathing patterns ventilator parameters. Asynchronies during invasive are caus...
