Background and Aim: Delayed muscle soreness in military forces is unavoidable due to the nature of their mission, and purslane extract has a significant effect on enhancing their function due to their anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. So the purpose of the present study was investigation of the effects two consumption methods of purslane (Portulaca oleracea) on functional indicators o...

The plasma levels of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its sulfated form (DHEAS) decline approximately 80% between the ages of 25 and 75 yr. Muscle mass and strength also decrease with aging. Published data on the effects of DHEA replacement on muscle mass and strength are conflicting. The goals of this study were to determine whether DHEA replacement increases muscle mass and strength and/or e...

Angioma or hemangioma is a benign vascular tumor which rarely occurs in muscles. It mostly affects young adults. We report a case of intramuscular hemangioma of quadriceps with painless extension contracture of the knee and a mass in the thigh. MRI allowed preoperative diagnosis of intramuscular hemangiomas and, primarily, T2-weighted images allow specific topographic assessment and give an ind...

A lipoma is a fatty tissue tumor presenting as a painless slowly growing mass that can affect any part of the body rich in adipose tissue. Lipomas can be present in the thigh, shoulder, trunk, etc, although they are usually small. We are reporting a 65-year-old man with a giant lipoma involving his left buttock and lumbar region.

Osteochondromas are the most frequently occurring bone tumors and can rarely lead to vascular complications. A 14-year-old boy with solitary exostosis of the right femur presented with a mass lesion at the posterior aspect of the thigh. Radiological studies demonstrated a popliteal artery pseudoaneurysm. In this case report, radiological findings of this lesion are reviewed.

The aim of the present study was to compare "absolute" and "relative" knee extension strength between obese and nonobese adolescents. Ten nonobese and 12 severely obese adolescent boys of similar chronological age, maturity status, and height were compared. Total body and regional soft tissue composition were determined using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Knee extensors maximum volunt...

A case of histopathologically proven extraskeletal osteochondroma of the thigh is presented along with its radiographic, CT and MRI findings. This is the first such case reported, to the best of our knowledge. The diagnosis of extraskeletal osteochondroma should be considered when a discrete ossified mass is localised in the soft tissue.

PURPOSE The metabolic cost of walking increases when mass is added to the legs, but the effects of load magnitude and location on the energetics and biomechanics of walking are unclear. We hypothesized that with leg loading 1) net metabolic rate would be related to the moment of inertia of the leg (I(leg)), 2) kinematics would be conserved, except for heavy foot loads, and 3) swing-phase sagitt...

Women generally exhibit greater fatigue resistance than men, due in part to differences in muscle mass. Less muscle mass in women results in decreased oxygen demand and increased oxygen delivery at the same relative workload compared to men and yields greater endurance. The purpose of this study was to examine sex differences in muscle fatigue between male and female athletes matched for muscle...

Testosterone supplementation reduces total body adipose tissue (AT), but we do not know whether the effects are uniformly distributed throughout the body or are region specific, or whether they are dose related. We determined the effects of graded doses of testosterone on regional AT distribution in 54 healthy men (18-35 yr) in a 20-wk, randomized, double-blind study of combined treatment with ...
