A mathematical model is presented for both batch and continuous cultures of microorganisms utilizing inhibitory substrates. The key feature of the model is the use of a inhibition function to relate substrate concentration and specific growth rate. Simulation studies show that the primary result of inhibition by substrate in a batch culture is an increase in the lag time whereas in continuous c...
A method for the estimation of faecal fat excretion using cuprous thiocyanate as a continuous marker is described. Results obtained from a single stool sample are in close agreement with those from a three-day collection using this technique. The method is simpler and more accurate than collections done without a marker.
The 1,2,3,4-thiatriazole-5-thiolate anion (TTT(-)) was found to be a strongly binding ligand for CdSe nanocrystals, quantitatively exchanging various long-chain ligands to yield stable colloidal suspensions in common polar solvents. The TTT(-) ligand thermolyzes at <100 °C to produce thiocyanate in situ, resulting in reduced quantum confinement in nanocrystal films. CdSe(TTT) possesses far high...
Complex formation of 1,6-anhydro-β-maltose and sodium ions was characterized using single-crystal X-ray crystallography and solutionand solid-state NMR spectroscopy. The 7-coordination structure, comprising two 1,6-anhydroβ-maltoses, a thiocyanate ion and a sodium ion, was identified in the crystal of the complex, where a sodium ion was positioned in the center of the pentagon. In the NMR study...
Femtosecond two-dimensional infrared (2DIR) spectroscopy was carried out to study the dynamics of vibrational spectral diffusion of the nitrile stretching vibration of thiocyanate anions (S-C≡N(-)) dissolved in liquid-to-supercritical heavy water (D2O). The 2DIR line shapes were used to extract through a nodal slope analysis quantitative information about the correlation function for temporal f...
UV-Vis measurements showed that the interaction of pseudohalide anions, A(-) (A(-) = N3(-), NCO(-), NCS(-)), with electrophilic bromocarbons, R-Br (R-Br = CBr4, CBr3NO2, CBr3CONH2, CBr3H, CBr3F, CBr3CN or C3Br2F6), in solution results in formation of [R-Br, A(-)] complexes. These associates are characterized by intense absorption bands in the 200-350 nm range showing distinct Mulliken correlati...
In this paper we discuss the newly synthesized binuclear species [Cu2(L(PY18))2(μ1,1-N3)2(N3)2] (1) and [Cu2(L(PY18))2(μ1,3-SCN)2(NCS)2] (2), as obtained from the monometallic precursor [Cu(L(PY18))Br2]. These gemini metallosurfactants incorporate metal/anion cascade cores and are investigated by experimental and theoretical methods. Diagnostic IR stretches support the presence of μ1,1-bridged ...
In the title compound, [Cd(NCS)(2)(C(7)H(7)N(5))(2)(H(2)O)(2)], the Cd(II) cation lies on an inversion center and is coordinated by the N atoms of two thiocyanate anions, by N atoms of two 6-(4H-1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)pyridin-2-amine ligands and by the O atoms of two water molecules in a distorted N(4)O(2) octa-hedral geometry. The dihedral angle between the triazole and pyridine rings is 23.15 (12...
Terpyridine and quaterpyridine-based complexes allow wide light harvesting of the solar spectrum. Terpyridines, with respect to bipyridines, allow for achieving metal-complexes with lower band gaps in the metal-to-ligand transition (MLCT), thus providing a better absorption at lower energy wavelengths resulting in an enhancement of the solar light-harvesting ability. Despite the wider absorptio...
The title compound, [Cd(NCS)(2)(C(14)H(14)N(2))(2)], features crystallographic inversion symmetry with the Cd(II) ion located on a centre of inversion. The Cd(II) ion is six-coordinated in a slightly distorted octa-hedral geometry with the thiocyanate anions in axial positions. The angle between the benzene and pyridine rings is 69.64 (9)°. An inter-molecular C-H⋯S hydrogen bond stabilizes the ...
