Tinea refers to superficial infection with one of three fungal genera-Microsporum, Epidermophyton, or Trichophyton-that are collectively known as dermatophytes. These infections are among the most common diseases worldwide and cause chronic morbidity. They are usually diagnosed by direct microscopy and fungal culture, which are burdensome to perform in the clinical setting. To supplement conven...

Chromobacterium violaceum infection is rare but causes a high mortality rate particularly in immunosuppressed persons. Since its clinical presentation is non-specific and the diagnosis basically relies upon blood culture and sensitivity, this infection should be considered among the organisms targeted empirically for antibiotic therapy when a cellulitis or rapidly progressive illness follows ex...

Chromobacterium violaceum, a saprophyte bacterium found commonly in soil and water in tropical and subtropical climates, is a rare cause of severe, often fatal, human disease. We report 1 confirmed and 2 suspected cases of C. violaceum septicemia, with 2 fatalities, in siblings after recreational exposure in northeastern Brazil.

Various dermatophyte isolation media were quantitatively appraised by colony counts for their ability to support growth when suspensions of trypsin-treated infected-skin scales were used as inocula. Evaluation included guinea pig skin scales infected with a granular Trichophyton mentagrophyton mentagrophytes, and one trial was conducted using human skin scales infected with Trichophyton rubrum....

The draft genome sequences of two Chromobacterium violaceum strains isolated from the Rio Negro are reported here. These bacteria carry most genetic systems associated with the production of bioactive compounds, but unlike other C. violaceum strains, they lack a dedicated operon for arsenic resistance.

This is the first report of Chromobacterium violaceum strains that are aerogenic. Two pigmented strains of C. violaceum and their nonpigmented variants produced gas in glucose broth. Kliger iron agar, and triple sugar iron agar. They were similar morphologically and biochemically to other anaerogenic strains studied previously.

By means of UV radiation 74 physiological mutants of the dermatophyte Trichophyton mentagrophytes (Robin) Blanchard were induced. These mutants had changed optimum cultivation temperature and mostly changed morphology and sporulation as well.

This report describes the application of PCR fingerprinting for the identification of species and varieties of common dermatophytes and related fungi utilizing as a single primer the simple repetitive oligonucleotide (GACA)(4). The primer was able to amplify all the strains, producing species-specific profiles for Microsporum canis, Microsporum gypseum, Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton ajelloi...

The fungistatic and fungicidal activities of sertaconazole against dermatophytes were evaluated by testing 150 clinical isolates of causative agents of tinea pedis, Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, and Epidermophyton floccosum. The overall geometric means for fungistatic and fungicidal activities of sertaconazole against these isolates were 0.26 and 2.26 μg/ml, respectively, al...

Chromobacterium violaceum infection is confined to the tropical and subtropical areas, with almost all reported cases occurring in the Southeast. The most common feature of this infection is sepsis, followed by cutaneous involvement and liver abscesses. Treatment consists of surgical drainage of purulent collections and appropriate antimicrobial therapy, such as chloramphenicol, gentamicin, imi...
