Direct-to-consumer marketing of unapproved stem cell interventions is a well-known phenomenon in countries with lax medical regulations. However, an examination of Internet-based marketing claims revealed widespread promotion of such interventions by businesses based in the United States. Such commercial activity suggests that regulatory agencies must better oversee this marketplace.

We used a claims database to assess coverage for rotavirus (RV), diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis, and pneumococcal conjugate vaccines among infants in the United States. Similar coverage was seen until 7 months of age, after which RV coverage lagged. Missed opportunities for vaccination at well-child visits were found to vary by age.

Functional foods and ingredients that are safe and efficacious have the potential for a positive impact on health. Current regulations in the United States governing claims about foods and dietary supplements, including functional foods and ingredients, are briefly reviewed. Research and communications challenges necessary to bring such products to the market are discussed.

Lyme disease is underreported in the United States. We used insurance administrative claims data to determine the value of such data in enhancing case ascertainment in Tennessee during January 2011-June 2013.
