G(u,u',u") = 0, (1) where u = u(x, x,..., x), and u', u" denote all the first and second partial derivatives of u. For simplicity we will assume here that both u and G are scalars and denote by ua, uab, the partial derivatives dau and respectively dahu; a,b =1,2, ..., n+1. Let u (x) be a given solution of (1). Our equation is said to be elliptic or hyperbolic at u°(x) according to whether the (...

Although there has been a great deal of research on impression formation, little application of that research has been made to electronic commerce. A research model was constructed that hypothesized errors, poor style, and incompleteness to be inversely related to the users’ level of perceived quality of an online store. Further, this perceived quality of the online store’s Web site would be di...

This paper presents a method for modeling users’ perception of software quality. The method aims to improve the quality of data derived from user opinion surveys and facilitate the analysis of such data. Additionally, using aspects of Belief Revision theory, the proposed model offers a way to measure users’ opinion in early stages of product release and a way of predicting the opinion subsequen...

We consider the problem of designing optimal linear codes (in terms of having the largest minimum distance) subject to a support constraint on the generator matrix. We show that the largest minimum distance can be achieved by a subcode of a Reed-Solomon code of small field size. As a by-product of this result, we settle the GM-MDS conjecture of Dau et. al. in the affirmative.

This paper is based on the research which was conducted earlier on Kansei Engineering (KE) and resulted in a new concept for scissors to redesign it with another method called “User Centered Design” (UCD). This is a shift from translation of the consumers’ psychological feeling about a product related to their perception of the design (KE) to focus on designing for and involving users in the de...

OBJECTIVES Despite excellent performance in speech recognition in quiet, most cochlear implant users have great difficulty with speech recognition in noise, music perception, identifying tone of voice, and discriminating different talkers. This may be partly due to the pitch coding in cochlear implant speech processing. Most current speech processing strategies use only the envelope information...

Existing instruments for measuring risk perception have focused on an abstract version of the concept, without diving into the the details of what forms the perception of likelihood and impact. However, as information security risks become increasingly complex and difficult for users to understand, this approach may be less feasible. The average user may be able to imagine the worst case scenar...

Auditory training has been shown to significantly improve cochlear implant (CI) users' speech and music perception. However, it is unclear whether posttraining gains in performance were due to improved auditory perception or to generally improved attention, memory, and/or cognitive processing. In this study, speech and music perception, as well as auditory and visual memory, were assessed in 10...

Information systems projects are undertaken by institutions due to perceived need and benefits that such systems promise. The understanding of users’ perception of ICT implementation enables organizations benefit from such investments. Although research on IS investments in developed nations abound, there is scare research on developing nations especially those south of the Sahara. This paper e...
