The polarization-dependent gain (PDG) characteristics of a vertical-cavity semiconductor optical amplifier (VCSOA) are measured, and the case of the PDG is determined. It is often assumed that the polarization states of a VCSOA are degenerate because of the circular geometry of the device. This assumption is not true in practice, and it is found that VCSOAs possess a dominant linear polarizatio...

Vertical cavity semiconductor optical amplifiers (VCSOAs) are attractive devices for use in coherent optical amplification, especially where 2-D amplifier arrays are required. However, the coherence preservation quality of a VCSOA depends strongly on the bias condition, resonant wavelength mismatch, and the optical input power level. We characterize the coherence degree of a VCSOA as a function...

We report explicit analytical and numerical results for the polarization resolved intensity noise of verticalcavity surface-emitting lasers operating in the fundamental transverse mode. We describe the fluctuations of the linear and circular polarization components of linearly polarized states on both sides of a nonthermal polarization switching. Our description is valid for small and large bir...

We report the onset of wave chaos in a real-world vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser. In a joint experimental and modeling approach we demonstrate that a small deformation in one layer of the complicated laser structure changes the emission properties qualitatively. Based on the analysis of the spatial emission profiles and spectral eigenvalue spacing distributions, we attribute these chang...

An en face, medium energy electron boost of approximately 10 Gy is often given to stomal and peristomal tissues. Because the boost is considered a simple treatment, CT-based treatment planning is rarely used. Further, the results of such a plan might be inaccurate, as the complex dose distribution surrounding the stoma air cavity is poorly modeled by many treatment planning systems. We construc...

A classical, stochastic, coupled-oscillator model for the emergence of partial coherence in arrays of vertical cavity surface emitting lasers is presented. The spectra of the uncoupled lasers determine the second order coherence properties of the coupled system. Predictions of the resultant radiation and interference patterns are verified experimentally.

Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) are a new type of semiconductor laser that have emerged as an economical alternative to conventional edge-emitting lasers. Anisotropies within these lasers, such as birefringence and dichroism, cause their optical output to favor one of two orthogonal linear polarizations; however, other optical outputs such as elliptical polarization and polariz...

The polarization dynamics of a vertical cavity surface emitting laser is investigated as a nonlinear stochastic dynamical system. The polarization switches in the device are considered as activation processes in a two dimensional system with a saddle cycle; the optimal way of switching is determined as the solution of a boundary value problem. The theoretical results are in good agreement with ...

Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL) is a type of semiconductor laser with laser beam perpendicular to the surface of the semiconductor substrate, as shown in Fig.1(a) [1]. VCSEL has many advantages, such as non-divergence output beam, fabrication and test on wafer, easy two-dimensional integration, and single longitudinal mode work. VCSEL is composed of an active region sandwiched be...
