Vision is arguably our most important sense. Loss of vision can isolate a person and fear of blindness is common in people presenting to ophthalmic casualty departments, no matter how trivial their complaint. In 1994 there were 181 958 registered blind, and 133 823 registered partially sighted in the United Kingdom. The Royal National Institute for the Blind estimates that underregistration aff...

The so-calledAir Quality Index (AQI), expresses the quality of atmospheric air. The overall AQI is determined from the AQIs of some reference air pollutants, which are calculated by a transform of the respective concentrations. Concentrations of air pollutants are compositional data; they are expressed as part of mass of each pollutant in a total air volume or mass. Therefore, air pollution con...

In this paper we present view dependent information theory quality measures for pixel sampling and scene meshing in flatland. The measures are based on a definition for the mutual information of a line, and have a purely geometrical basis. Several algorithms exploiting them are presented and compare well with an existing one based on depth differences.

The research presented in this thesis is targeted towards obtaining high quality novel views of a dynamic scene using video from multiple wide-baseline views, with free-viewpoint video as the main application goal. The research has led to several novel contributions to the 3D reconstruction computer vision literature. The first novel contribution of this work is the exact view-dependent visual ...

This paper presents a method for solving the Best Next View problem. This problem arises while gathering range data for the purpose of building 3D models of objects. The novelty of our solution is the introduction of a quality criterion in addition to the visibility criterion used by previous researchers. This quality criterion aims at obtaining views that improve the overall range data quality...

In this paper, 3D parametric active contours are used to segment contours of flexible objects. The contour is a 3D curve or a "weak" model supplying information about the object contour. Views from two or more viewpoints are incorporated and enable direct reconstruction in three-dimensional space, without utilising volumetric images or separate active contours on each image. This curve is optim...

Data quality is a difficult notion to define precisely, and different communities have different views and understandings of the subject. This causes confusion, a lack of harmonization of data across communities and omission of vital quality information. For some existing data infrastructures, data quality standards cannot address the problem adequately and cannot fulfil all user needs or cover...

There is a great interest today in voice communication over the Internet (VoIP). If the Internet is to become the universal network for all communications needs, and thus is to displace the telephone network for voice communication, it must be capable of providing the same level of service quality as the telephone network. Today, this does not seem to be the case. For example, the performance o...
